Do Hermione and Draco really have "intellectual chemistry", though? I mean, Hermione's brilliant and Draco....I'm not much of a Draco fan so my information might be faulty, but the only class I remember hearing about him doing well in was Potions, because Snape favored him. Other than that, all his insults seem to come down to "Weasley, you're poor and your mom's fat" "Granger, you're a mudblood" "Potter, you stink", "Longbottom, you're fat and stupid" which aren't really the marks of a particularly witty person.


Does Draco have some genius that I'm too dumb to see? (I'm not trying to attack you or start a shipping war or whatever, I'm genuinely curious- I've seen the "Draco/Hermione as intellectuals" argument many times and I'm not really sure where it comes from.)

Haha, to be honest, no I don't think he's actually super intelligent or anything. I wouldn't be surprised if the view of him as such comes more from the aristocratic quality than from true intelligence. As far as I know, he's solid in school and that's about it, but there does seem to be a popular conception of him as a smart person.

My comment about intellectualism was more directed against Ron and Hermione than for Hermione and Draco - a case of "well if D/Hr doesn't truly have -much-, at least they have -more- than R/Hr." My views of both pairings are also largely influenced by the movies (fresher in my memory than the books) which I know tend to dumb down Ron and thus make me dislike him with Hermione more. It's like...I -want- to like them together, but I just can't, because I can't imagine that someone like Hermione could feel enough like intellectual equals with someone like Ron to be in a relationship with them. That's my beef. But I accept Rowling's choice and just try not to fuss about it, and usually ship D/Hr if I feel like shipping Hermione with someone.

I don't know if he's smart, but he seemed to have been a fairly proficient spellcaster. I personally never saw him as being book smart like Hermione, but I think he is cunning. You don't have to be intellectual to be cunning. Like the way he tricked Harry into sneaking out for a duel when they were 1st years or the fact that he noticed Harry hiding above his booth with his invisibility cloak. Admittedly I never thought of him as anything more than a bully with petty insults when I first read the books, but I can see now why so many people found him appealing and surprisingly it may have little to do with the fact that his counterpart in the movie was good looking.

He was pretty clever in HBP, coming up with a plan to get Death Eaters into Hogwarts all by himself. :)
