Notes:

This is not your forum to identify and call out specific people just to call them assholes. Call out general actions you find reprehensible, mod ability/inability, that kind of stuff, but once you get into what basically amounts to 'this person is a stupid bitch and here are some icons/an lj layout/add. info to identify them with' - no.

even though in all actuality nearly every fucking person in that situation would be more concerned about their own survival than a strangers.

LOL A BABY IS NOT THE SAME THING AS A STRANGER

ARE YOU 12?

Ehm, yes it is...unless it is your baby, which was never specified in the hypothesis. It's just a stranger of a very young age.

A baby is a stranger if you don't know it. Words have meanings, remember.

Do you really think humans don't leave babies to die every single day in every single country on the planet. Fuck deserted islands, how many starving orphans did you feed today? Are you heartless? Do you know anything at all about the way the human psyche works? Do you think that every single person in Nazi-occupied Europe, or every non-indigenous Australian in the 19th century, or every US settler was a horrible, awful person? Cause almost all of them stood by idly while babies were brutally killed, even those with the means to easily help one or two. Do you really think that in such a situation you would be different? Cause statistically speaking, it's incredibly unlikely.

This is an amazing comment.

It also reminds me of a conversation (if you could even call it that) that I stumbled across on a forum a few weeks ago. They were discussing the starvation problem in Africa at the moment and the hundreds of women who were forced to leave their dying babies on the side of the road because they were too weak to carry them any further or because their babies were so close to dying there was no point taking them any further. And there were so many commenters sitting at their expensive computers in their comfortable homes with a stomach full of food, calling the women "monsters" and "cunts" for leaving their babies behind, and "whores" for even choosing to have babies in the first place (because we all know that women in third-world countries get the very best sex education available! they also never ever get raped.)

The fact of the matter is, nobody knows how they would react in a life-or-death situation. We like to think we would act rationally and treat others equally and with respect. But if you're scared, alone and dying for food and water, there's no doubt most people would stomp on others just to get to safety and/or a full stomach. Our instincts for survival are far stronger than our societal expectation to treat others nicely (especially if we're in a situation where societal expectations don't matter, e.g. on a deserted island).

I remember seeing something similar.

It was heartbreaking.

There was this woman...and she really looked like a skeleton with skin over her, she did, and she was carrying her infant into a refugee camp.

Turns out, she started off the journey with two kids - but she did not have the strength to carry them both. So she decided to leave the older one, hoping he'd survive, and decided to try and save the younger one. Once in the camp, she found her husband and he went looking for the older infant, but I don't know if they found him (and if he was alive). These are heart wrenching decisions, but these people need to make them. If she had not left one child, likely both she and the second child would not have made it, and there would have been 3 dead.

But it's easy to judge with our fridges full.
