I always though Romeo and Juliet was a bullshit pairing anyway.

[identity profile] mythc-writer.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I can see why you think that. I was always annoyed during the final act when Juliet kept something so important from Romeo, yet she told Tybalt. Not to mention he did save her once or twice, so I can totally see why they would be shipped.

[identity profile] tigerpetals.livejournal.com 2011-08-27 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I figure that was because Romeo would obviously try to stop her. And trying to stop her did get him killed while she chose to die anyway.

Actually I wonder if she told Tybalt because she thought he'd be the least likely person to stop her, while maybe knowing more about the Escalus thing. It struck me that she wanted a way out but was trying to resign herself to dying, so she came to someone who was a little older than she and seemed to know more about the Capulets than she. She couldn't have come to people she knew loved her and wanted her to be safe.

[identity profile] mythc-writer.livejournal.com 2011-08-27 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
...I love your icon.

Ahhhh...now that does make sense. So she didn't tell Romeo because she did want out, but thought she was stuck with it? So talking to Romeo wouldn't have helped since he would actually try to stop her, and might, in fact, sacrifice himself for her? Well that last part you didn't say, but that would make sense.

Still, I'm annoyed that she did that. She was even sword fighting about the whole Escalus thing, which was hinted at, but wasn't nearly as clear as it could have been. From what I remember, Juliet went from truly loving and trusting Romeo to being secretive and even doubtful.

[identity profile] tigerpetals.livejournal.com 2011-08-27 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't think she doubted him. She fought him because she has a deep commitment to her people- it's like Buffy sending Angel to hell. What would have been the point in trying to maintain their relationship when she has to die soon -it would be leading him on and make things more painful for her- and he couldn't do anything to prevent the necessity of her death.

Yeah, I didn't completely understand the Escalus plot, but what I did understand and Juliet seemed to understand, was that the world needed the tree and would fall without it. If they had succeeded in saving Juliet, they would have died minutes later as the continent crashed into the ocean. Like a giant crowded plane crash. Only Juliet found some other way, which still required her to die, to use the Escalus seed inside her to make the continent float down onto the sea.

[identity profile] night-owl-9.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
I can see this. While watching, I wanted the show to explore Tybalt and Juliet's relationship a little more - there's a tension that simply is not in Romeo and Juliet's relationship.

[identity profile] tigerpetals.livejournal.com 2011-08-27 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. I don't actually think they were attracted to each other, but I still want to see it in fanfic- maybe it's the personality difference, combined with some of the parallels of the characters. Whereas with RXJ, it's really sweet and pure and all, but although that helps make the tragedy more poignant cryable-over, it's not something I'm actually interested in seeing outside of that tragic context. I mean I was kind of bored and annoyed during episode 10.

[identity profile] nemo-de-la-meer.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
God, I loved Tybalt. I always thought he had a thing for Juliet. But it pains me they never carried on with it in the series.

[identity profile] tigerpetals.livejournal.com 2011-08-27 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
It pains me that there isn't much stuff for it in fandom. For the series, I have mixed feelings because knowing the names of the characters kind of spoils any wanting of a different ship on my part, though of course I'd be happy-delighted- if the potential for it was recognized in canon. But if the names for everything were different, I'd be really pained that it didn't happen.

[identity profile] sir-hellsing.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Is this was one of Juliet's sidekicks who crushed on her, sure. But Tybalt? Can't see it. C'mon, he was the biggest Shipper on Deck from that couple in that series. It was hilarious.

He'll probably kill himself before becoming an obstacle.

Juliet was drawn to someone idealistic and pure like herself. Tybalt's bad boy aura turned her off immediately.

[identity profile] tigerpetals.livejournal.com 2011-08-27 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with the latter, though I think they didn't spend much time together in the first place.

I don't see them, in canon, as attracted to each other. We know Juliet has instant and enduring love for Romeo because that's just how it has to be in the story, and we know very little about Tybalt but sometimes I think maybe he doesn't care about her at all.

I don't know about him being a shipper- he said all those things towards the end, but I interpreted his conversation with Romeo as his having strong opinions about guys putting other things about their loves. Course he could be, but I don't know why he'd be invested in the ship except for Juliet's sake.

Yes, it is funny for the broody highly-skilled mysterious warrior to be the main shipper for the pure angsty romance between two teenagers.

I still like the ship, however, and I think the personality difference having them clash a bit even while they were on the same side is part of what some people (including me) like about the dynamic. That and he's so pretty.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I still kinda OTP-ship RomeoxJuliet, but I'd understand the appeal of TybaltxJuliet -- it's sexier. ;D

But I guess Juliet was never attracted to Tybalt's "RAWRR RAWRR REVENGEEE" negativity -- I think she admired Romeo for his good-natured idealism. :P

[identity profile] tigerpetals.livejournal.com 2011-08-27 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, in real life I can see how their having similar personalities makes them good for each other. Though they fell in love before getting to know about each other's good-natured idealism, I think (it's been a year, so I could be misremembering). And Tybalt is so ambiguous I don't even know if he's cardboard or complex. (I prefer to imagine him as complex.)

It's just that while poignant on the show, out of the tragic context of their impending deaths and their families hating each other mortally, it kind of bores me. Not in the show, but I can't ship it outside of it. It doesn't have to be boring just because they're similar (and they do have some differences), but it's like plain marshmellows or something. Enjoyable but bland, and it impaired my enjoyment of episode ten, though not the rest of the series. The whole pure first love at first sight doesn't make for an interesting thing to watch in and of itself.

The whole dynamic of Juliet being steel-hearted while very kind and forgiving clashing with Tybalt's negativity (yet with peeks at a possible softer side), while they're both on the same side is part of what makes me want to see the pairing in fanfic (and in canon if only they all had different names). Or at least more interaction- I'd even read a fic in which canon is completely intact but they spend more time together developing a friendship or mentorship or whatever (well I'd prefer to read a positive one, skimming a Tybalt fic once in which he didn't care about Juliet at all broke my heart). They have these seemingly opposite personalities, but they can bring out the other sides in each other that are more similar to themselves. I think there were hints of this in the show, though not in a romantic way. He took her out and wanted her to be more tough- she did eventually get past her problems with killing and being the Capulet heir even though she was still trying to spare Montague's life, and he sometimes acted nice to her and tried to support her romance after she told him she loved Romeo. They could have done more with the dynamic, somewhere in the middle of the show-which sometimes dragged- without changing the final episodes. This and that he's pretty.

I am so relieved to find recent posts, even comments, about this ship that I have responded to every one when normally I lurk in every fandom I am a part of. Well, and about the show at all. It's depressing when your fandom is both small and nearly dead (and so you cannot find stuff for your fanon ship).

[identity profile] tigerpetals.livejournal.com 2011-08-27 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I did enjoy the main pairing, but cannot ship it. Thank you for making such a pretty post for the secret, because now I have fanart for the pairing. I saved it.

I don't even necessarily want to see it canon (cause of the series title, but if it were named anything else...), I'd be happy with more fanfic and fanart for it. But I've found very little fanfic, much of it could be interpreted as OOC, and only in one of them is the feeling shared by both characters. And they're all super short. This is the only fanart I've found.

Course most of the fandom is gone and it was small in the first place.

I can link people to one fic I found I really liked (same fic on both sites):

So I just made long replies to everyone who commented. Maybe I should combine the posts and put it up in my journal- and even make an essay for it on that community about ships. Though it'd be a pretty pathetic showing of fanwork for it when it came time to link.
