.........you are not seriously comparing real life elements of homophobia and racism to a fictional group about fictional issues....

oh wait, slytherinfen. i believe it.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
You don't recognise the minority vs majority issues faced in the Harry Potter books. It's kinda a big point in the series.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
yeah and that issue was blood purism which if you had a reading comprehension level higher than a toddler, you'd have noticed that the MAJORITY of who carried out that prejudice were slytherins. or did that little tidbit of information get in the way of fapping to draco?

and even then, comparing them as if they have the same amount of meaning is incredibly offensive.

Wasn't the Gryffindor legend Albus Dumbledore the one who was all "For the greater good"?

[identity profile] angary.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, but nah. I understand the "he wasn't 'just a kid'; he was old enough to know better!" argument, especially from Harry's POV, but Dumbledore dropped that mindset in the end.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Except there are groups who do believe in 'genetic purity' - some of whom even bring that into their religion.

And you know what? That still doesn't explain undermine one of the major themes of the book by lumping a whole group of people together indiscriminately.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
*undermining

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
you know what, folks? good guys can be dicks too. (I thought Dumbledore was livi-- er, formerly living proof of this) i don't think McGonagall should have done what she did, it was wrong, but I understand WHY that thought occurred to her. A LOT of Death Eaters had kids in that House and in the moment she felt she couldn't count on their loyalty (or trust them to fight loyally against their own parents)... still wrong, as I'm sure some were very loyal to Hogwarts, but yeah.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, good guys can be dicks, Dumbledore was an example.

But did everyone have to fucking CHEER after she said it? Sure, I understand why she might've made that decision, but fuck if I should be okay with everyone if they're cheering about marginalizing a group of people.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I had almost the opposite experience, then - no one cheered and a few people even looked at each other with "wait, what?" expressions.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Anon from above - I honestly don't have an issue with why McGonagall did what she did; it is understandable. What I ma having an issue with/was trying to point out that, by having that scene and having a whole house lumped together indiscriminately, then screenwriter completely made one of the themes of the book - and, admittedly, the one I liked best [even with the flaws to it] - invalid.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
shhhhhh it's just fiction

fiction and interpretations thereof are never informed by real-world ideas or viewpoints or biases

it just sprung up out of the aether fully formed and untouched by human hand

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
it's funny/sad how many people ACTUALLY think that... "it's just a book/movie!" yeeeah because things created by human beings can't be flawed by the society they were raised in. really now.
