The whole "for the greater good" thing ended up in tragedy, but it really didn't culminate into anything evil being done by Dumbledore.

only because grindelwald was even more evil and twisted than dumbledore was. if it hadn't been for that, 1990s britain probably would have consisted of muggle slave camps with dumbledore as their supreme ruler or something.

I really doubt that tbh. Young Dumbledore may have agreed to Grindelwald's plans, but I don't think he was sadistic or power-hungry like Grindelwald was.

Point of the matter was that he DID change for the better, and I think people should take what he became as proof of what kind of a person he was rather than what he could have become.

For what it's worth, I always saw Grindelward as Gryffindoresque too. Since he didn't go to Hogwarts there's no way to know what house he would have been in, but he didn't strike me as a Slytherin.
