JK Rowling said before they met she was thinking she'd hate him because she thought he'd fuck it up and like Ron best, but he surprised her by saying that Hermione was his favorite character. TBH I always thought Kloves used Hermione as a self insert, and that's why we see so much her being so lovely and so awesome and so smart and so perfect and why everyone loves Hermione so much! And why Harry had a major boner for her, even when he was dating Ginny.
I think with Chris out out of the directing chair, suddenly Kloves got more say in highlighting Hermione's EPIC greatness and tossing Ron's loser ass to the side.
It did upset me because I thought Ron was fantastic in the first two films, but then for the majority of the rest of the films he was more or less just there.
