I thought that they were interesting in a way, but I couldn't really get engaged with her character at the point, and even though I can see how she became that way, it still felt excessive to me.

It bothers me that when male characters that are pretty monstrous get POV chapters, they end up getting redeeming attributes (see: Jaime, Theon), but Cersei went axe-crazy and lost her fool mind. In the first book, her unhappiness in her marriage and the twincest thing and wanting to protect her children all made sense for motivations for what she did, but the further things went on, I feel like she became a wicked step-mother caricature. I guess I just wish she'd gotten to stay bad, but with a reason, rather than morphing into completely Stupid Evil as time went on.

Very well said. I agree completely, and that really is at the heart of what bothers me about it, too: the fact that she really did just get stupid.

Especially since then her troubles with Jaime, her grief over Joff, and even her treatment of Tommen just seemed to take a back seat to being drunk and drunk on her own ego. When I read the line about her basically not thinking things through, and not even bothering to think that something could have gone wrong in the most basic way possible...

I facepalmed and wanted a rewind button.

Like, ok. I get it. We needed eyes in King's Landing, and we needed to essentially make the situation worse (is what it boils down to Lol). But was it really necessary to rob Cersei of her cunning, and reduce her personality to "I am the very best. The best there ever was."

Well, that's a bit tongue in cheek, and you've framed the issue much more eloquently than I could ever hope to. So yeah, word.
