Depressed people are not easy to sympathize with at all if you don't suffer (or have suffered) from depression yourself. Depression is not something that has to be portrayed in a 'good' way because how people see it from the outside it's never good. It makes you very unlikable as a person to other, that's how it is.

Rebuild!Shinji is a lot less depressed (or at least it's shown less) and his characterization is more shallow now. I like them both but I don't... think you understood Shinji's character if you think Rebuild!Shinji has more 'depth'.

I've been depressed (granted not a soul crushing depression), and dealt with panic attacks before. I was also that "kid" at multiple points in my life where people decided I wasn't likeable anymore. I know the feeling quite well.

I think the problem is nobody experiences depression the same, and the way Shinji was feeling his or dealt with his wasn't how I dealt with mine (which isn't bad or wrong at all). On top of that, they way they portrayed it just didn't work for me.

I don't think this discussion is going anywhere, tbh. I think I felt more of a connection with Reboot!Shinji, others didn't. It's not really a big deal. It's just a matter of opinion. Also, you can't really say I don't understand Shinji due to the fact that I didn't like the older series. You can understand a character years later and with a different PoV and handling.

This whole thread is just based on differing opinions that are all valid. If you feel I'm coming across as though other's opinions are invalid, I apologize. I do mean that sincerely.

I was actually coming to apologize too for sort of dismissing your opinion yesterday by writing you didn't understood Shinji, that's not how it works. Some people like and 'get' some characters in a way because of many different reasons and as long as it's not for something completely discriminatory (racism, sexism, etc), it's a valid opinion. You don't have to apologize at all, you just wrote your opinion without doing anything wrong. I do hope you accept mine tho, I'm sorry.

I was just feeling a little defensive yesterday, I guess? The secret hit too close to home and I shouldn't have invalidated your opinion like that. Sorry again :)
