you are not the only one, anon

funny thing, i hated the end when i was little (she didn't get the guy) but now it's my favorite part (she doesn't need the guy).

imho she's a great role model, except for the slave-owning

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
nope. she actually needs him. It's he who doesn't need her anymore.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, really. Rhett was all "I'm done with this shit" while she was blubbering and in denial. Not exactly an "Ah, whatever, I don't need a man!" ending.

That said, while there were plenty of flaws with both the book and her character, she was a survivor and she was doing it in a man's world, so for that I see her as a role model of sorts - for both her good and bad choices.

i guess i feminist-ized the movie in my head :( i remember her saying "Tara! I'll go home" but not the "and find some way to get him back" part ...

[identity profile] duckgirlie.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
The going home to Tara part is only the end of the first half.

[identity profile] cold-river-blue.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
The way I remember it (but I haven't seen it in years) the very end is her planning to go home to Tara and think about it tomorrow... as in, figure out how to get him back. And I totally romanticize it because neither one of them can live without the other. It's like the dreamiest dysfunctional relationship ever.

Maybe... I watched it a couple of days ago, but it was nearly 2am by the time it was over. I just remember being really annoyed at Ashley the first time I watched it, taking the possibly-erroneous message that the film was about how you shouldn't let people down easy BUT JUST TELL THEM THAT YOU DON'T LOVE THEM or you'll just ruin everyone's lives.

[identity profile] olivia-y.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
I thought you were talking about Ashley.

She's an inspiration to me in both directions -- both aspects that I want to integrate into myself, the strength and determination and blithe confidence, and also as a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of blind pride and of focusing so hard on survival that you lose touch with the importance of interpersonal relationships (and of, y'know, behaving like an empathetic human).

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
You aren't alone OP! While she certainly had her flaws, she also had some amazing qualities - all the ones that go with being a survivor for example, and those are certainly admirable...and her bad choices could be used to remember some of the things *not* to do.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's basically why she's one of the greatest female characters ever. She's a horrible person in so many ways, and yet, she's so strong and brave, and keeps a whole bunch of high-minded, mostly ungrateful people from starving to death even as they scrutinize her every move.

Personally, whenever, I'm in way over my head, I like to think of Scarlett's flight from Atlanta and return to Tara. As silly as it sounds, it's always a little comforting to think my bad day wasn't anywhere near as bad as hers.

I loved her more in the book, since you got to 'hear' more of her thoughts, and know more about how she felt and how her brain worked. But still one of my favorite characters of all time.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
I really love the part where Mitchell talks about how Scarlett understands how to play men, but doesn't even begin to grasp the inner emotional lives that make them respond the way they do. IIRC, the narrator likens it to viewing other people as akin to mathematical equations (the only subject she ever excelled at in school).

It's an insight that really helps me know how to interpret her character. She has feelings towards others, but at the same time she's inherently incapable of true empathy. I do think Vivien Leigh tries to put that into her performance, but a lot of shading is inevitably lost in the process of adaptation.

Yes! She listens to Old Miss talk about watching her mother die and she has no real sympathy, she's just impatient with the 'looking back' sentimentality and wishes old people didn't talk like that. Oh, Scarlett!
