I'll cry bitter tears if they don't finally make a -- GASP -- action figure of a girl. Bastards didn't make a Toph or Katara action figure for A:tLA (to my knowledge) but they damn well better of the main character!

They're a cheap brand that look like large lego, though I think they are official merchandise. I can't remember the actual brand name, sorry. I bought them at some random comic shop while I was on holiday. They're only about four inches high, so Six might need to stand on my Centurian's shoulders to fight Korra!

I saw all the scary scary fanwank that went down when the ATLA movie came out and pretty much vowed never to get involved with that series if THAT was representative of the fandom in general (I was only marginally aware of the show to begin with since I don't watch much tv), but I have to say that what I've been hearing about Korra is kinda making me consider checking this new series out.

Oh, I can totally believe that, I heard enough about it from nonwanky sources to know I'd never want to watch it. But the fans were really scary, even when they were talking just about the show o.o

The fandom seems kinda wanky, but the series itself is really great. You could do what I do and just enjoy the show without bothering with most of the fandom.

I'm usually like that, too! It was easier to not get involved with ATLA because my whole family is really into the show, so I didn't have to just enjoy it alone.

(I should clarify that like the other commenter, I think the outrage over the movie was pretty justified. But there were also, like neverending shipwars and other such silliness. Not that some of my fandoms don't have that to one degree or another.)

I don't know, I'm still put off by the fact that they have to advertise her as, "LOOK HOW COOL I AM, LOOK AT HOW BADASS I AM, OOOOOH, I DON'T TAKE NO SHIT FROM ANYBODY, I'M SO AWESOME!!!!!" Seems like a perfect set-up for a Faux Action Girl to me, and I hate the fact that they put so much stock into it, like having a strong female character is some revolutionary new concept.

I have nothing against the character herself, but the fact that they decided to flaunt the fact that she's hard-headed like something we should be proud of them for just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

The more I look at Avatar, the more it looks like the creators began the show with little to no understanding of the gender inequality in TV shows, and have slowly become more aware of it while taking steps to counter it in their own show.

The final form of this is of course making their main character a girl. Which in theory would be great, but I've noticed the same thing you have, that "LOOK AT OUR FEMALE LEAD! SHE'S HOT-HEADED AND TAKES SHIT FROM NO ONE! LOOK HOW PROGRESSIVE HER CHARACTERISATION IS!" sentiment. It's worrying because she sounds like every 'strong female character' ever, the brash no-nonsense ones that creators throw into their stories because they think it makes them look progressive, and to try and obscure the fact that every other member of the cast is a dude. I'm trying to have faith that the creators are still heading in the right direction and this is just a coincidence, but I'm terrified that they're going to backslide to the state they were in in season 1, where they were so busy showing off their female lead that they forgot to put more than one female character in the show.
