I agree with you, though I've only read Adair's revised edition of the book, which is supposed to be more like Bertolucci's film. I love both, but I guess I always loved the UST between the two men. It reminds me a lot of Little Ashes, where Lorca and Dali use a female friend as a sexual conduit because they don't feel they can sleep with one another.

I haven't read the book, but I enjoyed the film. I definitely would have appreciated a bit more homosexuality, for superficial reasons.

I haven't read the book but I thought the movie was pretentious and silly, and no amount of gay sex could've saved it. Still, it was pretty jarring how the movie avoided tackling the homosexual aspect.

(Also, I thought Bertolucci was really showing his age, in a "perverted old man" sense...)

I do love the film (and I very much liked the book though I actually can't remember how much if any homosexual content there was in it, and it was the revised version anyway) but that did annoy me when I found out because it sounded like a silly excuse.

Book is "The Holy Innocents" by Gilbert Adair. Movie is called "The Dreamers."

Am I the only one who finds it disgusting that the only reason you want the gay sex scenes is for the porn? Fetishizing us gays is just as disgusting as being openly homophobic. Neither recognize us as 'people'. Just objects to serve your own gross agenda.

So sorry I gave you the wrong idea... :( I wanted to see the porn simply because the couple have amazing chemistry in the movie and ... there's a scene where they almost kiss, and I just think that they are so, well, hot together. Whenever I see a couple with amazing chemistry, I want to see them have sex, it doesn't matter if it's a gay couple, a hetero one or a lesbian couple, and I resource to fanfiction... I think many people are like that, I can't be the only one.

Love this movie. I didn't know Bertolucci had cut those scenes, and I always felt they were missing, not knowing they'd existed in the first place. What a shame; the movie would have been more complete as a narrative with the Matthew/Theo scenes left in.
