I like cars, but I totally do this as well. Man, that Vietnam special made me yearn to go there. I also love the filming techniques they use (it's all pretty, okay?) and a lot of the music. I love discovering new music through Top Gear!

Well, they do win awards and get lots of praise for their cinematography, so I wouldn't say you're at all in the wrong.

no no no that is part of the fun!! I watch top gear for:
- jokes & funny interacting from the presenters
- awesome travel scenes and crazy travel experiences
- beautiful shots of cars and driving and raving about cars

all three are equally important to me.

I think they tend to make an effort to show off the places they go. And usually in ways that a regular travel show might not! And while I don't know if they'd recommend you take their Middle East trip, they still managed to show some of the beauty over there too, stuff that lots of Westerners might never even imagine.

Considering that Top Gear was supposed to be about testing cars and giving a fair consumer opinion based on performance (in real life circumstances), value for money and service, I don't think they really can complain.

I don't even have a driver's license and I used to watch that thing religiously. The Vietnam and Iraq specials had me swooning at the screen they were so beautiful.

It is the BBC, I wouldn't be suprised if the producers thought it was socially important to teach people about the world.

They definitely made a point of talking about the Vietnam war, and the idea of the middle east as a featureless mass of "violence", Hurricane Katrina, that sort of thing.
