This, so much. Tom was charming and manipulative, not creepy.

[identity profile] firstmoonie.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
IMO,the whole HBP was a disappointment for me and this was one of the main reasons. However kid!Tom was fine.

[identity profile] sandvich.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish they'd gotten him back too -- or at least someone who could reasonably portray a charming, persuasive sociopath instead of a teenage version of Damien from The Omen. He's got Ave Satani practically leaking out his ears.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
He wasn't Damien. Damien had the sense to be subtle.

He was Macauley Culkin's character on The Good Son. All the was missing was the "Don't fuck with me" line.

I enjoyed movie 6's flashbacks for what they were but...
Yeah, I was pissed when I heard about that. I was pissed after I saw it. I'm pissed now. They should have brought back the first actor. I just... try to... take it in jest or something.

Yeah, it really shouldn't be that difficult to make a 28 year-old look vaguely 16.

[identity profile] nadinthedreamer.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
agree about the second actor. completely failed at being charming, little creep...

[identity profile] agentak.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I hated that they used age as an argument when the chick who plays Moaning Myrtle is, like, forty.

[identity profile] captain-loki.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, because this 16ish year old actor had complete control over the direction his character went.

I am sure the director was all "okay now be subtle and charming and not creepy" and he was all "fuck you I do what I want'

Not saying that I don't agree with you, because I was disappointed that they opted for a stereotypical villain as opposed to the book version. That was one of my favorite parts of the book, the level of manipulation, the "i am going to act all shy and sheepish and sincere about horcruxes".

It was the same thing in DH2 when they cut out everything that Riddle did to coax the story of the diadem out of Helena.

[identity profile] nursethalia.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. It's a different director and the films took a completely different turn once the third one came around (thank goodness), and it's not the actor's fault if they wanted his character to appear disturbed. I thought he did very well at his role, but I do wish the director had decided to go with the book's description.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm I partially agree. Would have loved to have seen him repraise his role he did such an excellent job, but I kinda enjoyed how creepy that kid was.

[identity profile] cigarettelover.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree completely. I didn't like the CoS guy, he didn't really do anything for me. Whereas the HBP was, IMO, phenomenal. I thought he was incredibly smooth and charming and oozed with a sort of easy confidence that I imagined Tom having.

[identity profile] nursethalia.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Heck, even the younger version in HBP did wonderfully IMO. I loved the creepy charm.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Really? He definitely oozed confidence. But he also oozed "I am obviously about to do something very evil here". I'm surprised thunder and lightning didn't strike in the background, every time he spoke.

[identity profile] canspy.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. That GQMF should have been in all the movies. They could have included the flashbacks from his post-Hogwarts years when he was finding the horcruxes, too.

[identity profile] dontgiveahoot.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Com[pletely OT, but OMG your icon. I am jealous of it. I crave it. Is it at all gankable? I always give keyword credit!

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Well, each to their own, but I gotta say that I prefered the HBP kid over the CoS guy, and not just because of the age difference. I don't think that HBP kid was creepy, just rather self-satisfied with a "wiser than his years" vibe.

The CoS guy was never charming or charismatic either. Just sort of sullen. And expositionary.

Expositionary = forced to speak a lot of explanatory dialogue in a non-convincing way.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Is it just me, or does he look like Chris Colfer now?

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed so much. One of my friends told me she wanted to see Tom from CoS return in HBP and was pretty pissed when I told her they got a new actor.

[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I liked both. COS guy was definately hotter. But both of them pulled off creepy and yet charismatic and seductive albeit in different ways. And I think that COS guy would have looked too old by the point HBP was being made to pull off teenage Tom.

I agree with you to an extent, but a truly believe the CoS actor wasn't very good... his acting, I mean.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I half agree with you. I couldn't take my eyes off of the 2nd Tom Riddle. He was a lot more charming than the first. He's a narcissistic derp IRL though :/

He doesn't seem that bad to me. Was it the 'favourite movie' question? I saw his answer as a joke more than anything, but hey, to each their own I suppose.

Yep, another aspect of the books which didn't translate to the screen. In the book Tom was a creepy little shit when first meeting Dumbledore. Tom realized that he had been indiscreet and opps, let the evil show. His charming persona was cultivated at Hogwarts in order to manipulate others.
