And thank you for proving that you're dumber than a stack of rocks :)

Losing weight is not simply a matter of effort. Your body chemistry and family history play a massive role in this. Please direct your attention to a little condition called PCOS (http://women.webmd.com/tc/polycystic-ovary-syndrome-pcos-topic-overview). Hormone imbalances like PCOS are startlingly common, particularly in woman, and most go completely undiagnosed because the symptoms are difficult to spot as symptoms; many of them won't even show up on blood work unless the tests are specific. And you know what? They seriously, seriously fuck up your ability to lose weight.

Wanna know how I know this? Because I had undiagnosed PCOS for the majority of my teen years, and one of the biggest symptoms/side-effects of PCOS is the fact that weight is almost impossible to lose if it's not treated. And you know WHY my PCOS went undiagnosed?

Because my doctors were assholes like you who believed that being fat was always a choice; that the reason I couldn't lose weight was because I just wasn't trying hard enough. I just didn't put enough effort into it. Even when I was literally starving myself -- living off of less than 500 calories a day -- and working out as much as I could, even when my body fucking gave out on me and I ended up in the hospital because of it. It was because I just wasn't trying.

So, please, go fall off a cliff somewhere. "Many, if not most" fat people are not fat by choice. Some are, for sure. But many are just like me, only they haven't gotten someone to listen yet when they say "I just can't lose the weight, no matter what I do."

I know PCOS exists. I'm sorry you suffer from it. The statistics I've read put its prevalence at 5-10% of women.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polycystic_ovary_syndrome) Overall, 64% of the US population is overweight or obese.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overweight). Thus MOST fat women don't have PCOS.

At any rate, I'm one of the stupid lazy cows who spent 3 years gaining weight because I just couldn't be bothered to eat right and exercise. You're not. What's it to you if I hate on the group I'm part of a little?

(Anonymous) 2011-08-31 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
You missed the part where I said hormone imbalances LIKE PCOS. There are plenty of them; I've researched them in detail both before and after my diagnosis. Unless you can offer statistics (that DON'T come from Wikipedia; if it doesn't count for academia, it sure as hell doesn't count here) for every single one, your point is invalid.

"It's to me" because by spewing this shit, you're spreading an incredibly negative stereotype that actually hurts people. It hurt me. It still hurts me, after having spent half my life being told I was just a lazy pig because of something I had no control over. And it sure as hell is still hurting other people.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-31 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
You don't like Wikipedia? How about the Journal of the American Medical Association? http://jama.ama-assn.org/content/288/14/1723.full
"The age-adjusted prevalence of obesity was 30.5% in 1999-2000 compared with 22.9% in NHANES III (1988-1994; P<.001). The prevalence of overweight also increased during this period from 55.9% to 64.5%" In other words in 1999-2000, 64.5% of Americans were overweight or obese.

And PCOS statistics: http://jcem.endojournals.org/content/89/6/2745
"The cumulative prevalence of PCOS in our population was 6.6%" (That's from the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism) They had a randomly sampled population of 400, and while I haven't taken statistics in a while, I assume that's a relatively sound estimate.

Now, say endocrine imbalances accounted for a whopping HALF of those. That would still leave a THIRD of Americans who could do better if they tried.

Finally, it's more damaging for a fat person to ASSUME they have undiagnosed PCOS (and give up trying to lose weight) than it is for them to assume their metabolism is fine and keep working at it.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-31 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
* sorry, I mistyped, assume endocrine imbalances account for the 64.5% overweight.

Did they use the same criteria for overweight in both cases?

Because in 1998 25 million people went to bed normal and woke up overweight.

Where do you see 1998? The two intervals are 1988-1994 and 1999-2000. They're comparing fat people in 1994 to fat people in 1999.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-31 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
that DON'T come from Wikipedia; if it doesn't count for academia, it sure as hell doesn't count here

lol @ fandom!secrets having stricter notability requirements than academia.

You DO know that this is not how you lose weight, right? You need at least 1200 calories(not cake) or else you just end up eating all kinds of shit again. It's not a diet, it's changing your whole lifestyle.

[identity profile] nomorenoodles.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
But they were told by the doctors that they weren't trying hard enough. I don't blame them for practically starving themselves because it was jabbed into their heads that they were too lazy.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-31 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
You're not fat due to lack of trying, you're fat because you're too fucking stupid to know how to properly loose weight.

500 calories a day, damn that is stupid.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-31 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
IKR? I'm interested to know how long they stuck to 500 calories a day, and how much they ate when they finally cracked and couldn't stand it anymore.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-31 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
cool story bro

(Anonymous) 2011-08-31 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
That's bullshit. Maybe you have an endocrynal problem or something like that, but MEN in America are as fat as women and I seriously doubt you can blame that on their ovaries too. You people have horrid eating habits as a country and that's the reason most of you are fat.
