In a way I agree, in that I don't think he was in love with anyone but Julia, and that was no romcom even if you don't count the ending. Doesn't mean he didn't have any feelings for Faye but he makes it pretty clear where his priorities were and I agree he wasn't "madly in love."

That said, I have written and read him with people who aren't Julia in fanfic and I think it can be done well. And if people wish he had gotten together with Faye there's nothing wrong with that.

tl;dr Your explanation makes sense but "I hate this pairing" always puts my back up.

Yes. It especially feels a bit strawman-ish when people say "I hate this pairing" and then go on to say "well it's not like I can't buy them hooking up now and then, but a sappy true love rom com just wouldn't work with the tone of the series."
In which case, why not just complain about Bebop fics written in sappy true love rom com style instead of a pairing, which can be written a million different ways?

I also don't really see the ship myself. I think Faye had a thing for Spike and they had a kind of flirtatious bantery relationship. But for the time they spent together there wasn't room to consider romance. Spike was in love with Julia (and probably would always have been) and Faye was slowly figuring out her past. At the most they could have had a we're-both-adults-why-not friends with benefits type relationship. I mostly see them (all five) as a family. YMMV of course.

I like the idea of there being attraction but I'd rather think they never even hooked up. Faye was so used to being exploited and I feel like there are points in the series when she flirts with Spike more because she feels like it's in the contract and isn't used to people just plain wanting her around. I kinda think there would have been less of an acceptance that they were something like family if they'd ever gone there.

I don't ship it either, but I really don't understand how sincere, abiding love automatically shifts a genre. Romance doesn't have to fall into certain tropes.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I ship it, but I believe he wasn't in love with her.

I do think he may have returned her feelings if he had lived, though.

[identity profile] dinerstate.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man I agree, mostly. I mean, I totally understand why people ship them and I'll do it kind of casually from time to time, but I've never truly accepted it. Spike/Julia was the only pairing that worked for me and even seemed in-character for Spike, ESPECIALLY while Julia was still alive. It might have worked post-series, though.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the pairing but I don't think of it as canon for all of the reasons you described, which I generally agree with.

I always saw them as bros to be honest
Doesn't mean they didn't find each other sexually attractive, but a romantic connection was just not there in my opinion

[identity profile] misscherri.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mind the pairing, but I agree that they (at least Spike) were not in love.

[identity profile] asimaiyat.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't watched the show in years and don't really care about the pairing, but as a huge film noir buff I have to say that "true love" is part of a significant number of noir plots. It's not out-of-genre.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothin' ever happened between those two. In my headcanon she was flirty with him a few times and he was polite but he declined to flirt back in a way that let her know he wasn't just missing the flirting, and she got the point. He knew she was enough clingy trouble in his ship alone that he knew he definitely didn't need her kind of clingy trouble in his bed.

JET/FAYE FTW \O/

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2011-09-07 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I always saw more potential between Faye and Jet.
