Ah, but Watson doesn't stick around because Holmes is exciting.

They're inseparable because they complete each other, not because they zip around in hansom cabs and get shot. Think of all the boring breakfasts they had, all the nights that Holmes sat around playing his violin while Watson read something dull and medical. That's where the love is.
