I actually came here to say that this is the point, but on the other hand, I've also noticed that many movies she reviews just aren't bad, or bad enough to make fun of them.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Making fun of bad movies is way too easy aynways. They're already bad. Pointing out the flaws in movies that are considered good usually interests me more.

But maybe that's just me.

Yay trope names!

But She Panned It Now She Sucks is such an immature concept. And besides, just like Critic, she's a character who Accentuates The Negative; I don't feel it's fair to give him the benefit of the doubt and not her, or vice versa for fanboys.

(Also, to get it out the way. Her whole Straw Feminist thing is hilarious to me.)

[identity profile] nochi_san.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I am replying to this half to use this icon, and half to say...that's the joke. The entire point of her (and the Critic, and a heap of other reviewers) is to take your nostalgia goggles and smash them into itty-bitty pieces. If that's why they don't like her, well, this is not the corner of the internet they need to be spending their time in. There are plenty of places that heap praise on the same movies she tears down.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree, because like others have said, that's the point. She reviews stuff to rip apart your nostalgic goggles and make you see that the shit that seemed really good when you were younger were, in fact, not really good.

I do think that some people who don't like NChick's reviews don't like how she approaches some topics. I do enjoy watching her vids, probably not as much as some other reviewers on the site, but her TLC tribute was a bit baseless. Especially the "majority of TLC fans were white". Where did she get the information that the TLC fanbase was mostly white? I'm a TLC fan and I am not white. I went to a mostly white elementary/middle school, and yes, TLC was pretty popular with a lot of the girls in my class, but that doesn't make me a KNOW that TLC was only popular with the demographic I grew up with.
I was always under the assumption that TLC was one of the groups that were able to cross over to the "wide media" and be popular across America no matter what their intended audience was. They could have just been really popular in the hip hop/R&B community, but their music from "Crazy Sexy Cool" was catchy and memorable so it crossed over to the wide media that even people who didn't really listen to hip hop and R&B enjoyed it. I never really put race into it, but I guess I am naive to assume that?
To me, TLC was like the Dixie Chicks; they were able to appeal to the masses because their music was enjoyed by more than just their intended audience.

[identity profile] emeriin.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that may have been partly for comedy. Remember the whole "I'm not racist, Nella's my black friend" running joke?

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
FWIW, I think you have a point. She does have a tendency to pick nostalgic things that have larger fanbases, precisely so that she can go into her analysis of why the things that she finds as flaws are such. After all, it's not like movies like North or Alaska have fans pouring out of the woodwork like they do with, say The Little Mermaid.

And that's why I like her reviews so much, because they do make you look over why you liked that popular movie/show, rather than just mocking the failures of it.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Umm...because "Teen Witch" and "Grease 2" had big fanbases?

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Did they say she ALWAYS does it? No, they said she had a tendency to do it, which is true.

Just here to say I love Alaska. But, I see your point.

But...so does Nostalgia Critic?

(Not that I'm NC's biggest fan, I've found certain things very problematic, but I think there's a bit of a double standard here?)

[identity profile] emeriin.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I said. Obviously not everyone's like this, but his fangirls tend to give him a pass with ripping nostalgia up while hating on the Chick, and her fanboys do the same thing with him.

[identity profile] cheshirecgrin.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't dislike her exactly, but I find her...less interesting, I guess, than the other reviewers. She constantly seems bored with what she's talking about. And even beyond that she doesn't make the review that fun to watch.

[identity profile] hallieface.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
This.

[identity profile] sairei.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this is a legit point to make. I mean, reviewing movies like Pocahontas and The Little Mermaid will most likely get more hate mail than if you review something like those Titanic animated musicals that the Critic reviews.

tbh I think it's honestly more interesting the way that she does it. I mean, not everything she reviews is terrible, and she says as such (like with her review of The Fifth Element). Her reviews tend to be more illuminating in terms of "Oh, I never thought of that" while still being funny, which is why she's the only reviewer on the site I watch on a regular basis.

[identity profile] copper-dimes.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, well I'm not really much of a fan of anyone on the site, just a casual viewer, but here's my take on why I'm not as fond of her videos over others (and I wasn't around in the 80s/barely remember the 90s, so I can't say much as to your reasoning).

First and foremost, her character seems really bored about what she's talking about. You can talk to me about the most boring subject in the world and I'll at least give you a short listen if you're passionate. The Chick? She seems like she'd rather be sitting on the john reading a magazine instead of telling us about X nostalgic thing. Second (and this is only in relation to the Critic because I only really watch the reviews put out by him and the Chick), her editing for a lot of her videos really isn't that great. Her humor's all right, and I like Lindsey herself (she's very attractive, seems pretty nice and I liked the little bits of her documentary that I could find), but her reviews tend to fall somewhat flat for me.

[identity profile] impurrfectprof.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think it's her character. Rage is more interesting than apathy. She really needs Nella and Elsa to balance out her character or she gets a little dull.

[identity profile] impurrfectprof.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, that doesn't make sense to me. Why would the Critic still be popular if that was the case?

(Anonymous) 2011-09-04 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Well he does get death threats for "bashing" some movies. Nostalgia can be creepy.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-04 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I doubt it. It's all just for laughs. People don't all have the same sense of humor. I don't find neither her or the guy that funny. I sometimes watch it more for the trip down memory lane, but I don't find them funny.

[identity profile] lit-wolf.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Uh... no. All the reviewers on TGWTG have ripped apart something that I loved in my childhood. Marzgurl reviewed the Land Before Time sequels, Nostalgia Critic reviewed Godzilla and Jurassic Park 2 and the Pagemaster, Spoony reviewed Final Fantasy X. All of these are things I love and I don't dislike these critics for it.

Nope, I just dislike most Nostalgia Chick reviews these days because I think she's gotten dull. She doesn't really review things any more, she just preaches about them.

[identity profile] sairei.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I just find her boring because she looks and sounds so bored all the time. Although she brings up valid and interesting points, I prefer the Critic's energy.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-04 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconding (thirding? fourthing? eighth-ing?) the people who don't like NC because she just isn't entertaining to watch. She seems bored, which is not engaging.
