on the flip side, he's also often written as the cool guy who everyone goes to for advice!

and there;s nothing wrong with trade school, keep your chin up OP!

LOL Canada as a cool place

(Anonymous) 2011-09-04 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Well... It's colder...

I get what you're saying OP. While I don't necessarily mind this situation in fic, sometimes I think Kenny is the one who would try the hardest to get out. He's shown to be pretty mature and determined, if the Mysterion arc is anything to go by, so I certainly think he's capable of it.

But don't worry, OP! Trade school is a-okay, and it's your life in the first place.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with trade school, and the skills you learn there are also in demand in lots of cool places, like Canada and California. Honestly you'll probably have better luck, career wise, than a lot of people with college degrees.

[identity profile] soymade.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, this. The US economy the way it is, it's definitely better to have a solid set of skills than a degree that could mean anything or nothing and no real experience. I think OP will do just fine ;P

I work with a whole lot of people who have never left the town they were born in. Yes, it's Boston, but some of them have never left the neighborhood they were raised in. With or without college degrees.

And you know, it's kind of nice working with them, because they've got a sense of place and history that the transient types (including me) can never quite muster.

(That's probably why I work with even more people who left for a while, but came back!)

Don't sweat staying where you are if that's what you like, OP. The world needs bedrock to go with all the driftwood.

[Canada is cool! If you ever do want a change, we're always up for new people :D]

On to the point, I highly respect people who go into the trades. I find it to be a little bit ridiculous the lack of respect you (as in the plural) are getting these days. It's a required job, and the world can't survive without you. I really hope societies views on it start to change soon, because the backlash is just hurting too many people.

Anyways in the same vein, I get you. I ran out of money during school, and I'm working for a school board now, but not where I really want to be, and while I'm fairly sure what I want to do, I feel kind of lost and left behind at times.

[identity profile] slr2moons.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It's very understandable you'd want a character you can identify with to chose a path different from your own. All my friends left my hometown right after high school, too. I did leave eventually, but it took me 12 years. Some people just need more time, is all! ^^

I've messed with the occasional South Park bunny with Kenny becoming successful, like building on that ep when he went to school in Europe to sing opera. Now I know there's at least one other person who'd like that...hmmm. Something to think about.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
On the contrary to that common thread in fic, I like to imagine Kenny -- kind of like Sam Winchester -- doing everything in his power to go to a school far away. Yeah, he's poor, but there are need and academic based scholarships depending on the school you go to. I'd love to see a fic where Kenny works his ass off in high school to make that happen, even if it means extra tutoring sessions, extra classes taken where he didn't need them, etc., just to get accepted to a school in California or New York or Florida -- somewhere far away from South Park where he A) doesn't have to deal with his family anymore, and B) can make something of himself so he doesn't end up like them/isn't poor for the rest of his life. I see no evidence within canon that Kenny feels responsible for his family (ffs he tried to induce an abortion in his mom to kill off any future little siblings, and the way he showed contempt at their actions as Mysterion really makes it seem like he doesn't care for his parents all that much), and he's obviously smart -- his acts as Mysterion proved this (yes, he needed Kyle's help, but he was already doing a lot on his own). I see Kenny as wanting to get out rather than staying in, and I think he would both realize that college is the only real way to do this and have the motivation to go for it with all he's got.

So, tl;dr, that's the kind of fic I'd like to see, because that's honestly how I view future!Kenny McCormick. Also, it'd be a wonderful, fantastic future "fuck you!" to Cartman after all the times he's ragged on Kenny for being poor and having no future.

Oh, and as a bonus, after "You're Getting Old" I think if anyone is most likely to drop out, it would be Stan. I could easily see that cynicism just turning into apathy as he gets older, and then . . . yup. See ya, high school. Just gonna bum around, smoke weed, and play Xbox all day . . .

It's pretty fucked up that people would write him like that based on his family's income level.

I'll admit, I don't watch SP, but one of my friends RPs Kenny so I've read his wiki article and...

I can't imagine Kenny, out of all the characters, being the one loser. 'Cause damn that kid's a little badass.
