Yeah, I miss it too. I don't even have a Dreamwidth account, and the so called replacement community on LJ is just... well :\

Honestly curious, what do you mean by "the fun got sucked out of it"? Has there been some drastic change in tone, format or content since it migrated to DW?

Well, the mods are pretty dedicated when it comes to maintaining an inclusive atmosphere, which means they're usually pretty quick to crack down on ableist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, etc...dialogue. That alienates some people. That COULD be what the OP is talking about.

I'm cool with it, especially considering how much crap goes on in other comic book communities.

My own complaint about the 'new' scans_daily is (what seems like) a lack of older content and a general atmosphere of negativity, but that's not too surprising. I'm not too excited about the general direction of superhero comics either...

There were a few dickheads on s-d who started a lot of shit, but, for me at least, what sucked a lot of fun out of the comm wasn't the inclusiveness or whatever, it was the bitching about there being "too much" slashy/subtexty scans (despite the fact that the comm was explicitly created as a slash comm) and wank wars over Civil War. You couldn't even enjoy your crack and slash without people wanking about SRS BUZNES. Plus, people were posting tons of scans of newish comics, which was sure to get the comm TOSsed one day. I'm friends with the mod of the old s-d, and I remember telling her, "I just know one day I'm going to go online and it's gonna be gone. It's inevitable."

The newer comms just haven't had any spark.

The fun started being sucked out around 2007 or 2008 for me. Maybe it was seeing how members would tear apart some amateur DC fanart or some act like the artists had personally pissed in their cheerios, when at least one had to have been underage. OTOH, you get artists like CWC who are truly disturbing.

The shutdown and moves killed it more, though. Along with the hypocrisy already involved in the community.

I wish I could find a detailed account of the whole Peter David mess that snowballed into the LJ deletion.

I hated that but I followed it to DW. The real killer (for me) came when people got so incredibly pissy about every little thing. Politics came up and I got annoyed and left (not that anyone noticed me, I hardly ever posted). Eventually I wanted to check it out again but their tagging system was a mess (it was on Delicious I think but it was lagging because only the mods could do it or something so I couldn't find anything current.)

I do miss this one guy (Icon_UK I think) who would post great Dick Grayson scans where he was Robin and Legally Hot. Luckily he cross posts occasionally so I can see his (always awesome) commissions.

What's going on now? I left around the move to dreamwidth when every other post became a Rules post and/or "words you can't say or baby Jesus will cry."

Plus that one guy with a hate-on for Brand New Day. I didn't care for the idea either but man. Chill the fuck out. You illegally download something so you can post a 1000 word rant about why you hate it in this comm (and argue with anyone that disagrees)? Do that on your private journal, bro.

Oh, I know who you're talking about. I can't remember his username (something about a box), but he is an extreme neckbeard. I saw him hit on a girl in anothe LJ comm because she was having her period. It was really creepy.

Box-in-the-box? And isn't he the man that commissions artwork of Spidey with a tiny dick too, or is that another regular?

Yup, box-in-the-box is his name. I dunno anything about tiny Spider dick art, sorry! He doesn't post at SD anymore, which is great because I was sick of his constant reports on Spiderman book sales.

One of my few joys during the soul shattering misery that was grad school was occasionally taking a break from studying to randomly grab some old comic out of my collection, scan the crackiest part, and post it to scans_daily and sit back and enjoy the comments. I miss that.

Omg scans_daily! I should've made my own secret about how I could brag about all my comic book "knowledge" because of that place. I loved it! It was hilarious and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Haven't checked it in aaages.

S-D was an unparalleled resource for fic writers, too. I could check the tags and find old scans from years and years ago... great for canon-checking, brainstorming, etc.
