You get great stuff and crap stuff in any fandom. Some of the fics that came out of the Gundam Wing fanfiction were amazing at its peak, and I'm finding a lot of great Hetalia stuff right now. It may be you're looking in the wrong places. Have you tried TV Tropes' fanfic recs page?

Yeah, here you go. (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FanficRecommendations) There's certainly some interesting stuff floating around in there. I wasn't partial to a lot of it for my fandoms, but I did find one of my favorite stories of all time through there, so there's that. Have fun!

It's not there for every fandom, just the ones that are either very big or have a big fandom. There's definitely Sailormoon recs, and they even have slash warnings for people who aren't into that.
