I think a lot--maybe even most fanfic writers and readers--can't ignore what they want. They can only ignore what they can ignore, if that makes sense. I've heard fic writers and readers say that they planned to ignore something but then found they couldn't because it was canon and so in their mind it was true.

Which of course doesn't mean the author did something wrong--they get to write their story the way they want the same way a fic writer does. Their story's just going to carry more weight because that's how life works. I have sympathy for the fic writer, but not to the point where the author necessarily shouldn't have written what they wrote.

In terms of the completeness of the story I wasn't thinking complete to the author or a particular reader but complete based on the story itself. For instance, Tolkien might not think LOTR is complete with the appendixes, but I don't think LOTR as a story feels unfinished without knowing who Merry and Pippin married. Ultimately there's no objective answer, I guess, but I wouldn't always go with the author's feelings on it, personally. But then, I definitely lean more towards the less is more side in general.
