I always envy people who share names with cool characters. On a different topic, I wonder if anyone's going to scold you for "giving in to tradition" with the whole husband's name thing. Personally I think it's totally up to the couple to decide who takes whose name or not, but I remember not too long back there was a giant screamfest about how terrible it was that Ginny and Hermione had taken their husbands' last names at the end of Harry Potter.

Meh, anyone who feels the need to scold me about it is a jerk who needs to mind their own business. I have my reasons, and it's not like my husband would have cared if I had decided to stay Anon Holmes instead of becoming Anon Hislastname.

For the most part, I love my new name- it sounds awesome with my first name (better than my old one did, in my opinion, which took some doing) and it's just different enough without being difficult to spell. But there was always something kind of cool aboout reading a Sherlock story or watching a Sherlock movie and being a Holmes myself, and a small part of me will probably always miss it.

I'm planning on changing my entire name when/if I get married or within the next couple of years. I'm hoping to move out of my hometown sometime soon, so I'll probably legally change it then. Too much of an effort to get all my relatives and friends to call me by a different name. I despise my entire name. I plan to take my (future hypothetical) husband's last name even if I do change it now. Screw the name change haters. Haters to the left, yo.

I kinda understand where you're coming from on the Holmes thing. My last name is reaaaaaaaaallllllllllyyyyyyyy unique and I got so excited to see a published author (only 1 I've ever seen with the same last name as mine) with the same last name that I bought his entire series of books (pretty good ones too!). I might miss that a little b/c of that but my name has nothing but bad memories associated with it for me, so I think I'll be happier to get rid of it.

And any want to be parents reading this, please quit naming your kids after a relative. My mother named me (female) after my father, got divorced when I was 3, and all I think of every time I hear my name is how much I despise my father for essentially abandoning me and all the other shit he pulled. I also don't appreciate having a male name either.

Oh man, totally with you on the naming kids after relatives thing. My dad is named after his dad AND his grandfather- they didn't even give the guy a middle name. He always hated it, and when my brother was born he was very insistant that his son would have "his own name."

I was one of those screamers, at least for Hermione. I just think it would have made more sense for her character to keep her muggle last name.

That being said, I kept my name when I got married. Didn't see any reason to change it.

[identity profile] johnnyabatti.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Don't the women change their names because (back in the day, of course) that meant becoming their husband's property? I might be wrong. I'm not even sure where I heard or read that.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-04 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
It meant that she was leaving her own family and joining her husband's, at least. Now, of course, it means whatever the hell the couple wants it to.

[identity profile] cousinmary.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was being all polite and delicate, but yeah, taking someone else's name mean a hell of a lot more than "Oooo, china pattern!"

When asked why I didn't change my name I usually answer, "because I married him, he didn't adopt me."

[identity profile] johnnyabatti.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
lmao brilliant

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
As long as you respect the right of other women (and men) to do as they please regarding their own last names. I just feel that it's a silly thing to get all worked up about. (For the love of heaven, please, please, don't go off on a lecture about societal pressure and tradition and all. I have a fairly thorough understanding of those things and I still don't think it matters one way or the other.)

...

...wait, what does her name being "muggle" have to do with anything? Granted some of the wizarding families have unusual names, but some of them definitely have "normal", not uncommon ones. I don't see why Hermione's family being Muggles should influence her in her choice of last name.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-04 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Nobody in this thread brought up those issues until you popped in and brought them up. You tried to start feminist wank and you didn't succeed.

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Dear one, were you aware of the tone this comm generally takes when this kind of issue appears, you would realize that it was not at all an unfounded expectation.

[identity profile] cousinmary.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking more of a "muggle pride" thing. Really, how many wizarding families are there? I bet most would have heard 'Granger' and -known- she wasn't a pure blood. Same idea as Anglicizing a foreign name to make it sound more American/British/somethingelseish.

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
oh,I see. I dunno, though, I never really got the impression that Hermione was all that into that kind of thing? I guess it'd make some sense from that perspective though.
