OP

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I enjoy the series for what it is: fiction. And I enjoy the idea of the houses and think that I have a lot of Ravenclaw traits. And I love sorting fictional characters from other series and thinking about what houses they might be in. I even enjoy thinking about what house my friends would be in if the houses were real. But they are not. And there is a difference between enjoying fiction and thinking that it is reality. When people say "I'm a ______," it is different than saying "I would be in ______".

Now you're just being pedantic. Most fans know full well that the Houses don't exist. They're using shorthand. It's a thing people do.

So... When people say that 'so-and-so is a ogre', do you think they mean this person is literally an ogre? Or do you think they mean that this person fits a set of characteristics that are associated with ogres? What about if someone says, "That test was a bitch"? Do you take them to mean that their test was literally a female dog?

You're being a little silly, OP. When people say "I'm, a ______", of course they're not literally saying that they've gone to a fictional wizarding school and been placed into a house by a talking hat. They mean that they feel like they would be in that house, and that they feel like they have the traits the house does.

so it's not "stop having fun!" it's "stop having fun that's not like mine!"

I bet you are a riot at parties.

But....

[identity profile] agentak.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
There isn't a difference. In the 90's when Friends was big, people ran around saying "I'm a Monica" or "I'm totally a Joey". It doesn't mean they litterally believe they are Monica Gellar. Grammar wise, no, the statements "I'm a Monica" and "I would be Monica" hold the same meaning.

OP, originally I thought you were just a STOP HAVING FUN type. Now I see you've posted this over a slightly different phrasing of a sentence.

Splitting hairs like that is just sad.

Odd, since I was around in the 90s, I watched "Friends" from the beginning, and I don't remember anyone I met ever saying that about the characters.
