Man, hyphenated names drive me batshit for no real reason whatsoever.

I just...kind of want to shake them and scream, "Pick one! Either one! It doesn't matter!"

I have no idea why it bothers me so much. XD

Why choose either or? Why not choose both? This is the reason I really like hyphenated names myself!

Actually, my last name is hyphenated, seemingly without any reason whatsoever. Somewhere down the line it was hyphenated and passed down, and it's been killing me that no one in my father's family knows why, lol.

I'm very big on the way that things sound, and Anon Holmes-Hislastname just didn't work for me in that respect somehow- my first name is pretty long, so it became a real mouthful. If I hadn't taken his name, I would have just left mine as it was. Besides, my main reason for changing my name in the first place was that I liked the symbolic fresh start that it gave me, which at the end of the day was more important than being able to tell people that I was descended from a fictional detective. I had my fun with that back in third grade, anyway ;).

I'm going to have to disagree with you, OP. I like the way it sounds. It sounds like someone named Anon is kind enough to home some guy's last name.

Hmm...maybe if we have kids I can name one Anon and give them the middle name Holmes?

A lot of the rich, "legacy" familes, like the Kennedys do that. The mother's last name is the child's middle name. I've always thought it was a nice way to pay respect to both families without resorting to the dreadeed hyphen.

first anon on this thread XD

That's what happened to my siblings and I. Although, we're far from a rich family. :p (My mother said it was tradition on her side of the family, and they're like reeeally rural farmers)

My mum did that with her own name - changed her middle name to her maiden name and took my dad's surname. Every bank/insurance company/legal beagle who dealt with her files thereafter thought it was a smart idea.
