If you can't get your tone across in words, maybe you should rephrase them instead of resorting to middle school chatspeak.

You're apparently not exempt from pretentiousness and overly affected writing, so I wouldn't expect this concept to make sense to you.

Chatting and writing are different, whether you like it or not. It's not a matter of not being able to "get your tone across in words" at all because of how something is read depends entirely on who is reading it. There isn't a whole novel that can help you figure out the context and get a feel for the writer's "voice." Emoticons and expressing actions or emotions in between asterisks or slashes are a necessity when conversing with people online. Otherwise, misunderstandings arise between what you read and what they meant. Also, keep in mind when someone is chatting they don't normally type in 3rd person, but in the 1st person which is infinitely harder to convey tone without sounding like you're insane commenting about the word around you. I said blinking with weary eyes and a heavy head. (or... *yawn*)
