Except Hedwig wasn't just some animal. She was Harry's pet and for a boy who didn't have much of a family, I can bet that he considered her family. That can extend to readers who feel the same way about their own pets. There are a lot of people who do consider them like their children or family. The thought of them dying can be heartbreaking.

Hedwig isn't just some animal to Harry. Of course not. Just as Ron Weasley isn't just "some person." But Hedwig is an animal and Ron is a person. Would it have been clearer if I had said that my confusion is over the idea of valuing a dead animal to whom you are close over a dead person to whom you are close?

I'm aware there are lots of people who consider their pets like children or family. There are also many who consider animals in a secondary class below human beings (like myself) but who can still be devastated by the loss of a pet, even if it's not to the extent that they would be devastated by the loss of a family member or very close friend. I find it very difficult to understand the first group because animals are animals and people are people, but it's not like I'd go out of my way to be a dick to people who feel that way (like the people talking about deeply mourning the loss of their pets in this thread for example).

You said you were confused, so I was enlightening you. To each their own. I personally find the value in a pet and person is on par and mourn the same way in each case. Anyone who passes away that I love will be sad for me. Any reminder or thought relating to it will also be sad for me. :/
