I'm going to have to agree with you OP. When people bang on about how the Slytherins are oppressed or all the interhouse hate ;_; is so terrible I can't help but think they are losing sight of the fact it's all fictional.

Zodiac signs are completely fictional and people date (or decide their days) based on it all the time. The idea that blood type determines personality is completely fictional, but in Japan bullying or workplace harassment based on blood type is so common they had to make a portmanteau to describe it.

Never underestimate the human ability to divide themselves into groups on a completely arbitrary set of criteria and then hate other groups based on equally arbitrary reasons.
