I'd say it depends, I used heavily be into animanga fandoms and some of the best long plotty angsty awesome adventure fic came from Naruto, Gravitation, Kingdom Hearts etc.

Have completely moved away from there, as I'm HD, Inception, Merlin now but I can still look back fondly and reread some of the better fics.

But yeah there was a lot of crap.
Agree with the age comment, older authors tend to write better, and some older authors actually write for younger fandoms so it's a bit of both really.
