I'm honestly not sure I see what the big deal is. There are tons of lj communities that only accept slash and fem-slash and exclude het...is that also offensive?

I don't believe I used the word offensive...

The secret poster was expressing her desire to see more activity in that community, and I responded by giving my reason for why I, specifically, am not a participant, despite liking pregnancy fic.

Although, to respond to your question, yes, I do have problems with communities that exclude het. I mean, I'm fine with communities that are devoted to one specific pairing saying "Make sure this pairing is the focus of the fic -- other pairings inside it are fine, but our pairing must be the main one". But I am just as uncomfortable in communities that completely bar any heterosexual relationships.

Some fandoms have slash vastly outnumbering het (or vice versa). So slash or het specific comms make it easier if someone is like "today, I'm really in the mood for some [fandom name] slash", and then they can go to the comm and not have to go through a bunch of het fics to find the slash ones

Yeah -- to be clear, I'm down with the idea of general slash or het comms. I totally get that :) But I get the heebie-jeebies with the come is like "NO x is allowed."

To give you an example, I'm an SPN person. I like Sam and Dean, but I like Sam and Jess too. Sometimes I might write something that is focusing on Sam and Dean in a slash relationship, but has sections that mention or flash back to Sam and Jess. I don't like when a community would bar a fic like that.

Now, I will say, I have noticed that slash comms are more accepting of het background couples than het comms are of accepting slash background couples, which has always been sadface for me, because I write het fic, and then have no where I can post it. It's primarily het, sometimes almost exclusively het, which means I can't post it in a slash comm, but I also can't post it in a het comm, because if I have even the smallest hint of gay in it, it gets removed.

I mean, obviously there are the 'We accept all fic for x fandom' comms, that do gen, slash, het, everything. So I use those. But it still makes me sad when I can't post a fic that is pretty much tailor made for a specific comm just because it mentions some other pairing or couple in the background.

And when I look at the fic I have written, the only fic I have that doesn't mention both at least one gay couple and at least one het couple is gen. Only my gen fic doesn't contain both. Once I'm writing romance, I'm likely to be writing several different sexualities, or at least have them represented.

Sorry again for the hugely long comments x_x It's a topic that makes me thinky, and it's one that's caused me frustration in the past, in terms of finding communities that aren't closed off to me on one side of the scale or the other.

Ah, I suppose I got confused as to what you were getting at initially. I can agree with what you're saying.

I think I've lucky enough not to have come across het comms that militant about having absolutely no gayness though. That's pretty dickish of them. It reminds me of how if a het story turns out to have the smallest hint of a gay couple in it, I've seen people be like "OMG WHY DIDN'T YOU SAY THIS WAS SLASH??? I'M DONE READING THIS". It doesn't say good things about you if even implied gayness in an overwhelmingly het story disgusts you to that point

This. I ship about equal parts het and slash, but I tend to wind up hanging around the slashers more often because they don't have drama queen hissy fits over a secondary pairing that is straight. In het comms, on the other hand...
