Anon, I love you. There was just always something about him that made me unable to like him, I think you've put the reasons into words better than I could.

Ahh, god I'm still so mad they cut that scene out. It was great on it's own and was the best thing they had for Angel.

I'm not sure. There were times in canon that he kind of annoyed me (too perfect, too devoted) and I didn't want to see him end up with Katniss. (I didn't ship her with Gale either though.) I guess I'm mostly referring to the fact that he didn't seem to "get" that she was only pretending (during the first Games) for the sake of the Games when that was so obvious to me.

By the end though he'd been through a lot and I thought he'd kind of proven himself as a decent guy.

(The babies thing was kind of "meh" to me though as Katniss seemed to clearly state that it was Peeta who wanted babies and convinced her and that got on my nerves. And I'm not an anti-baby person by any means.)

Well, yeah, it was supposed to be obvious to the reader. That's why it was literally spelled out several times in the books. We were getting all of our information from Katniss' POV, so of course we'd be more in tune with how she's thinking about something. If you basically tell someone you love them, and they basically tell you that back (even under extreme circumstances) it's not that odd to believe them.

Preach. I'd take Finnick any day over those two.

I see what you mean but I always wondered if we're really supposed to see Peeta as perfect or if that's just Katniss' perception of him.

A lot of those qualities seem to more make him creepy and weird to me where they point to him being way to obsessed with Katniss over everything else. Though in general in that book I could almost feel the author trying to not make him a Sue. Like yes, he's a great speaker blah blah, but not the survivor/winner Katniss is. He's smarter because she's more awesome etc. And then I figured the stuff in Mockingjay was the author saying that the brainwashing was kind of a good thing. Basically, it seems like for all the good qualities he's supposed to have, he's just there to symbolize something for Katniss so he's not really the Sue. A lot of the time when characters say that he's great they're better and just hard on themselves.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Whatever. I love Peeta. And I really really really hate the term Mary Sue. A lot.

I do think Peeta has flaws though. He was out of line with the way he treated Katniss at the end of the first book, and then he acts like a human and later apologizes. He is a sweet guy and he's not a Nice Guy either. But I do think that he needed the hijacking in Mockingjay to take the shine off his perfect-ness. He's a pretty well drawn character, but not as well drawn as Katniss. (Then again, no one else is as well developed as Katniss since the book is first person from her POV.)

If you want, I could find a definition of Mary Sue that Prim and Cinna fit. EVERYONE IS A SUE. Prim is wise beyond her years, smart, pretty and sweet. Cinna is clever, beautiful, a man who was raised in an oppressive society who was able to overcome it. What flaws do Cinna or Prim have, praytell?

I didn't mind Peeta that much. Sure, he has Sue-ish qualities, but I think he's completely overshadowed by the Sueness of Prim. Good god. Absolutely everyone nation-wide adores her, she's pretty (the more noble kind of pretty in this universe, not like Katniss or her father), she's a competent "born" healer, she's nice to everyone, she cares about all living things, and her main flaws are... being too compassionate (and that's Katniss speaking, who's rather cynical) and not being a person who could/would survive the hunger games, and not being a good hunter. Katniss mentioned that she gets scared easily, but this is contradicted by her rather brave actions in book 3, for example. And yes, this could count as character development, if only Prim had been a well-developed character to begin with. All we know about Prim is mainly from Katniss's gushing about her.

Also, she's named after a flower, but it's an innocent name, unlike Glimmer, or Cashmere, or whatever the people in district 1 and 2 were called.

I don't know if I'd call him a Mary Sue exactly (though it's such an overused term that I suppose it can apply to whoever you want it to), but I know what you mean. I enjoyed his and Katniss's relationship in the first book for the "keeping up pretenses for the cameras" aspect, but overall he is kind of a flat idealized love interest character who doesn't seem to care about anything but Katniss.

(Also, I loved Cinna. :<)

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I like this secret because I'm thinking of how if Peeta had been a girl, the replies to this secret would be about how you wouldn't be making this secret if she were a boy.

And think canon characters hardly ever merit the label of Sue/Stu, but Cinna is more of a Sue than Peeta if you want to play it that way.

[identity profile] uponadecember.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
He annoyed the heck out of me. When he was saying Katniss was all he had to live for, I was like... is this supposed to be romantic? It was just unhealthy and cringe-worthy. But I don't see how Prim and Cinna are much better. Almost everyone in THG was either all good or all bad.

[identity profile] csakuras.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Peeta is my favorite character, but I was bothered by his lack of concern for his family. Sure, his mother abused him, and his brothers didn't try to volunteer to take his place when he was selected for the Games. But they just seemed to drop out of existence, and that always kept him from feeling like a fully-fleshed out character for me. I was especially surprised that we never saw anymore of his father; I would have liked to see at least him a bit more involved in his son's life in Catching Fire.

At least Peeta seemed kinda pissed about his family being dead in Mockingjay, but that seemed more like he only cared because he didn't love Katniss anymore. I wanted to see him more upset about that. I mean, without his family, and without Katniss, who else did he really have left?

I guess the problem with that is the story is told through Katniss's point of view, so we never got to see any of the time he spent with his family in Catching Fire or what he went through while recovering in Mockingjay... But for crying out loud, we got to know Gale's family more than Peeta's, and Peeta was the more important character. :/

[identity profile] hells-hikari.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I agree completely. I can see him kind of not caring too much about his mother and siblings, but his father seemed to be a pretty nice guy.

In the same vein, (sorry if not entirely on topic) wtf happened to Madge? She seemed to be kind of important (not to mention that she was the one to give Katniss the Mockingjay pin) and then... she vanished?! Where was she in Mockingjay?

I think Peeta comes off as perfect because the book is narrated by Katniss, and she sees him as Good, as "the best of them". Everything is colored through that lens. The book doesn't dwell on Peeta's flaws because Katniss doesn't, but I don't think it doesn't mean he has them -- in fact, I enjoyed his character in part because of his issues. There's a reason Peeta considers himself disposable, and it's not simply noble self-sacrifice. I mean, come on, living for only one other person is not a good thing, or a romantic one, particularly when you didn't even know that person well. I feel like it gets genuine later on, but at the start, Katniss was someone Peeta built up in his mind so he could have some sort of connection to 'loving someone', since he never did with his family. At least, that's how it came across to me. I didn't think that was supposed to be something we were to approve of. I felt bad for him.

This is dead on. I don't think we're supposed to view Katniss as a reliable narrator - she's a young girl going through hell, not an outside, analytical voice. It's like when people say Prim is sue-ish because she's so perfect. But she's not really perfect, she's just a sweet little girl whose older sister thinks she's perfect. It's part of the reason that I dislike the first person narrative in the later books; we miss out on a lot of nuance by seeing things only through Katniss' point of view.

I started to type a reply and then found your comment did it for me. He is flawed- he has a temper he tries to control and mostly succeeds, but there is a lot of anger even before the games. He knows that he's good with words, and once he realises that he tries to use it to his advantage... and sometimes it backfires horribly. That's not a Stu trait. He has built up Katniss as somebody he was connected to, which is why he could believe her lies in the arena. He probably fell for her for a mixture of reasons, some good and some bad. I don't think it was a coincidence that the first thing he learnt about her was that she was the daughter of his father's ex, a nurturing and kind woman- a stark contrast to his own abusive mother.

As for why Katniss doesn't dwell, she has built him up as Somebody She Is Indebted To. That is the most powerful thing in the world to her. I think it's also the reason you don't see much of his family- they would illustrate his weaknesses, and she doesn't want to see that.

[identity profile] your-nonentity.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Preach. I almost hate Peeta because he's such a Stu. Also, he's a total creep, harboring a crush for that long for a girl he met for a second.

Love this.

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
I find it hilarious that someone other than Katniss is being called a Sue. And aww, Peeta. He's the boyscout character, it's why I liked him so much and why I could assume other people wouldn't.

[identity profile] carolpent.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
I think his main problem is that he is one of the few characters who we are told about but never shown. Which I suppose goes along with your theory of Mary-Sue, but I guess it makes his flaw that he is a complete nonentity.

[identity profile] magnetic-regina.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't find Peeta to be a Sue. Did find him to be really creepy.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think they just need to get written off the show.

Go away Team Rocket; you were supposed to have disbanded twice by now and Team Plasma is way more interesting than you. Heck, the anime even managed to make TEAM AQUA more interesting than Team Rocket. And Aqua and Magma were, like, the lamest evil team EVER.

[identity profile] micromyni.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. All of that. Especially the part with Katniss, Prim, and Cinna(let's include Rue, too) riding off into the sunset.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-14 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
I hated Peeta so so much. He was such a creep but I got the feeling that was completely unintentional on the author's part. Half the time Katniss kept beating herself up for not being good enough for perfect Peeta. Ugh.
