People have the right to dislike the series just as much as people have the right to like the series. The problem shows up when one of the former group starts insulting one of the people in the latter group for what they like and visa versa. If people can't understand this... >_>

I've never heard of fans calling people 'muggles' outside of any Harry Potter context. Does that actually happen?

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yes.

[identity profile] sairei.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Often.

[identity profile] tastylogic.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I was watching an episode of "What Not to Wear", and the woman getting the makeover used the word muggles in all seriousness and not in a Harry Potter context. It was awkward to watch honestly.

Is there just one person in here who keeps making slight variations of this secret?

[identity profile] rattyrayvn.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
It's kind of balanced out by "I was sorted into the wrong house!" HP-is-serious-business secrets.

[identity profile] crackitycrackho.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
At least they have more to work with than "Mbut HP isn't real!"

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I've definitely seen people in here going "HARRY POTTER ISN'T REAL!!!" a lot.

Overinvesting in a fandom to the point that it looks like you're starting to have trouble distinguishing between the fandom and reality is in no way something that is exclusive to Harry Potter fans.

[identity profile] ditdatdo.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Personally, it does seem worse in HP fandom, but that's probably just due to the sheer bloody size of it. It's pretty much inescapable.

[identity profile] runonmoonlight.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'm fairly sure for a while there I was absolutely terrified of the Avatar (the blue alien movie one) fandom. They seem to be less prevelant now, thank fuck.

[P.S Also I hate that movie with a burning passion, so that didn't help matters]

[identity profile] helenadax.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't understand why so many people feel the need to tell HP fans that Hogwarts isn't real. I mean... we know. Really.

+1

All I'm getting out of this secret aside from the bit about Harry Potter fans attacking anyone who dares to dislike the series, which is uncool no matter the fandom, is "STOP HAVING FUN, GUYS!!1111"

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
But when you get a bunch of people who seem incredibly upset by the fact that Pottermore sorted them into the wrong house, or having epiphanies because OMG wait, that makes sense! you kind of have to wonder... It's like, why are they so invested in what amounts to a fictional personality test that only bases itself on like, one or two personality traits per house?

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I love HP and I've had a lot of fun in the fandom, but some fans are ridiculously intense. I went to the HP premiere last July and it was a bit scary at times.

[identity profile] mistaria.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree unless HP is all the person can talk about. And that's annoying no matter what the person likes/is obsessed with.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly couldn't care less about them pretending they're real wizards, what makes the rest of the fandom so intollerable for me is that so many of them are either a) sheep, collectively jerking off a few select BNF, one in particular, b) elitists, c) utter idiots or d) a combination of the above.

[identity profile] hallieface.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
It does bother me when people use muggle as an insult, mostly because that's the kind of thing people were fighting against in the books, but it's fun pretending to be magical. I do it all the time. With friends IRL and otherwise. So yeah, you're silly is my point.

[identity profile] rocks-not-dead.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, and how, by saying these things, do they infringe on your right to dislike the series? While you are the one disrespecting them for doing something that is related to what they like?

[identity profile] ell-de-gothia.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
I think the muggle-thing can work. I read a newspaper this summer where the reporter - failing to see 'the magic' in rollercoasters - concluded that she must be a muggle because of it. That's a good way of using the word, if you ask me.

[identity profile] dentedsky.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
But dressing up and play acting is half the fun~~~!

Actually I think the word 'muggle' might be leaking into main media as a kind of joke word. I heard it the other day - where? - was it family guy or american dad or...?

[identity profile] candelleria.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
You seriously think they actually believe it's real?

Most of them just say stuff like that because they think it's cutesy. It's not in earnest. I would think that's obvious?

Also, deja vu with this secret...
