There are horror fandoms?

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
If you find this magical place, point me towards it.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
As a member of the Halloween fandom, I agree 100%
No, I don't want to read your fic where your self-insert Mary Sue cools Michael Myer's frozen heart enough for him to love and marry her. I want to read a fic where he guts her painfully while tilting his head in admiration of his work.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I write romance fic in Hellsing and Silent Hill. I'd call those horror fandoms, but I get the feeling that's not what you're referring to.

Anyway, I get enough unrelenting horror in the canon, sometimes I want to write about what happened to the people who survived (or if they would have survived.)

I include horror elements, when I feel like it, but... that's it.

(I'm not sure what you're hoping to accomplish by complaining in reviews. If people want to write fic you don't like they're probably not going to change their minds because you reviewed.)

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Don't most fandoms have tags or genres that state what kind of story it is? If it's listed as romance instead of horror you would think they would stay away from said story.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Not all archives have those tags, but the summary at least should make it clear, I would think.

I'm not blaming the OP for wanting more horror fics but reviews seem like the wrong place to bring it up.

(Oddly I got crap from one trolly reviewer who seemed to think my Silent Hill stuff was not romantic enough. Can't please everyone I guess.)

[identity profile] checkerbloom.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I would think horror is more difficult to write than romance or humour; at least it is for me, which is probably why actual horror stories are less common in your fandoms; it takes skill to do horror well.

I was on board up until your "s!b" note. Having a preference for a certain kind of fic and wishing there were more of it is totally understandable, but reviewing people's fic to go "Why are you writing in genres I don't like? You should be writing what I want!" is kind of a dickish thing to do.

Unless I've misinterpreted your statement, in which case never mind.

[identity profile] mistaria.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
This.

This person here has taken the words right out of my brain.

+3. That's totally dickish.

Pretty much this. And I like your icon!

Thank you! I'm fond of it myself.

[identity profile] angryscientist.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Fandom is the operative word here. I've read plenty of horror fic set in non-horror books/TV/movies and I've seen plenty of the opposite. Maybe the canon doesn't leave much horror for the imagination. If the fandom is big enough, prompt around, sometimes that helps spark the creatives. Or look for more genre-specific archives, regardless of fandom. Good luck!

[identity profile] wolfiemon.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah horror fandoms are very weird. I've checked on fanfic.net a few times and I'm amazed at the amount of Mary Sue fics where evil serial killers suddenly become kindhearted, loving and protective because they met a cute teenaged girl (the kind that they would be murdering in the movies too...). The huge amount of these is truly bizarre. xD It doesn't piss me off so much as it just confuses the heck out of me.

Oh and the rest of the fics are all Horror villain A vs. Horror villain B. And crackfics.

[identity profile] the-kumquat.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, I so agree. If I see one more "Jason Voorhees gets saved from eternal damnation by his Wun Twu Wuv" fic, I am going to cut a bitch. Possibly several bitches.

It's like they can't enjoy the character as he is, they need to change him, make him a better person. The whole reason I root for him is because he's a crazed, demonic killer. I don't watch the movie for his redemption, I watch it because I want to watch a crazy ass motherfucker kill some goddamn teenagers.
Then again, I don't want to have sex with him, so maybe that's why I don't get it.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really care about any of this, but I do like this comment.

[identity profile] the-kumquat.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Why thank you! :D

[identity profile] cold-river-blue.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
People write horror stories in non-horror fandoms. They also write highschool AUs, and alien invasions, and all sorts of things that take the characters outside of the canon genre. I don't generally like those things, so (if it's not an author I really like) I avoid reading them. It's not super difficult. The key is, rather than reading them and then commenting to tell the author you didn't want to read them, you simply don't read them.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
like what?

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! Thank you! I remember a while back there was a zombie fic comm, I of course get very excited. Then a post shows up for plots etc.. and everyone was picking fucking pairings and planning romantic storylines. I was like fuck that! I want post apocalyptic fic with people getting their limbs torn off and their brains eaten. I was so disappointed and left. If I want romance I can to any of the bazillion comms out there meant for that.

[identity profile] pikasafire.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you on this. I love to write horror, but I think the problem is that fandom doesn't read them. So, I'd rather save my horror plots and writing for RL publishing.

There's a horror big bang on LJ though, if you're after horror stories in fandoms rather than horror fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-14 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I get what you are saying, and definitely agree with several people above about the strange proliferation of romance mary sue fics in slasher fandoms, and nobody likes a bad mary sue fic regardless of the fandom.

On the other hand, a lot of people write fanfic to explore a side of a story not already explored in canon. That's why you have WAFF stories written in a fandom where the canon is dark and gritty, and also why you have darkfics written about My Little Pony.
