Are we talking characters or actors here?

If you're referring to the characters, then yes, they can be assholes. I don't think they're assholes in general, but each of them has their moments. This season was the perfect example of how they can all be jerks to the very people they call family. Much of season 4 falls into that category as well.

I honestly don't think you'll find many fans who truly think that they're perfect. Most of know that the boys have their flaws. Just because we may favor one over the others, it doesn't mean we all think they walk on water.

That said, if we're talking actors, what would give you the impressions that Jensen, Jared or Misha was an asshole? No doubt Misha likes to troll the fans a bit, but that's all in good fun. Frankly, they all seem like nice guys to me.

I would be an asshole too with the crap they've been through.

You do have a very good point here. I don't think the show would be nearly as entertaining (of the characters as wel-rounded) if they survived Hell, the Apocalypse, and everything else and still managed to end up acting like Little Miss Mary Fucking Sunshine 24-7.

Yes, this. How many of us would have survived the literal hell Sam and Dean went through, the betrayal and complete failure of everything he believed in that Cas went through and maintained any semblance of humanity?

If you're talking about characters, then you can have your opinion and others can have theirs. To me they are both awesome and flawed.

As for the actors, you don't know them in real life so your judgment is void.

I so wanted to see a Bobby & Rufus roadtrip, they were awesome.

They can all be assholes. I think that's the main point of it, tbh. Though Bobby's hypocrisy bothered me the most since unlike Sam, Dean, and Castiel, no one called him out on his bullshit. It still pisses me off that he got away with telling someone that was already suicidal that it was his fucking fault that he (Bobby, that is) hadn't killed himself already and continued to suffer.

But then I've been in the position (twice even) where I was the one standing between a loved one and their suicide when I was myself emotionally unstable, so I know exactly how much that sucks and how hard it is. I might be biased as a result but I haven't forgiven Bobby yet for being such a callous, cruel, horrible small person, especially since he just got worse at the beginning of S6 with not telling Dean that Sam was back from the dead for nearly a year.

He got better after that but holy shit, he was just a terrible person for so long. I can't get past that.

But they all are terrible people at times.

That's never how I interpreted that scene, as Bobby accusing Dean of causing him to continue to suffer. To me it came across as 'If I can keep going for your sake when I want so badly to check out, then you can damn well man up and return the courtesy.' Much like his remark to Castiel later on, when Cas had, from an angelic point of view, just become severely disabled himself: 'Quit pining for the varsity years and load the damn truck!'

There was simply no time and no room in their situation for whining or coddling; no matter how horrible things got, how tired and depressed and sick of it all they were, they had to pull themselves together and keep going. Quitting was not an option because it would mean the end of everything, for everyone, and Bobby knew that better than anybody. Making the others see it when they started to falter was his job. He wasn't, IMO, a terrible person; he was fulfilling an unpleasant but very necessary role.

I...don't know about that. I definitely think we're supposed to see their flaws. Like, a lot. Obviously we're meant to root for them, but they're deliberately quite moraly gray a lot of the time.

This is why I don't like Dean anymore. He used to be so funny and loveable even in his rare moments of being an asshole. Nowdays though, it's like almost everything he says is entitled, arrogant, or just plain douchey. Characters are supposed to be likeable, even when they're being mean, and Dean just isn't anymore. Sam has gotten much better about it since the earlier seasons IMO. As for Castiel, as I've said before, he's manipulative and prideful but if I had screwed myself over like that for someone who treated me like a dog then I'd be bitter too.

Why? Just because the character is the lead and is interesting doesn't mean you need to like them.

Yes, they are assholes, as are many of the minor characters. And that's why I love the show. OP, you're just really confusing to me- What, exactly, are you whining about? You're saying that 'Not everyone in fandom agrees that they're assholes,' so what? People are allowed to be wrong.

Well of course they're assholes. I don't know if you've realized this, but most main characters, especially in horror/sci-fi, are assholes. In fact, most heroes are assholes. The question is whether they are likable assholes. For you, they are not. For me, they are. I mean, I don't really get what you're saying, because Rufus was the most clearly irredeemable asshole hunter there was. Even Samuel had his love for Mary and Deanna, and Bobby, Cas, Dean, and Sam had devotion going for them, for a while. Rufus was an asshole to people he didn't know from adam, and who came to his door wanting his help trying to save people. He then basically extorted them for alcohol (not just moonshine, but top of line, this'll put you back alcohol). But he was so likable about it that you don't care. You clearly just like your assholes to be proud and loud.

That first one made me LOL. Ruby was epic.

tbh I would love each of them less if they weren't assholes at least some of the time.
