"They came to trust me and tell me things that even their other friends don't know."

I'll never understand why people do this. I have many online friends that I like to think are close to me, but the fact is: I don't know these people. I don't know who they really are, or whether they are who they say they are. I'd never tell them secrets about my life that could possible get me into hot water.

Because sometimes people are in pain and need to share, and just can't with anyone in their real lives, so they try and get it out online to work through it.

You don't really have close online friends then :/

I've talked to some people consistently for 7+ years and met them irl along the way.

Not saying to spill your guts to new people you haven't built trust with, but saying it's impossible to get to know people because it's online is equally erroneous.

I do have many close online friends. Some who have been my friends for 5+ years. But I would never share my deepest, darkest secrets with them (especially those which can be used against me) because regardless of how close they are to me, I don't really know them or what they are doing with my information.

Fair enough if you have met them IRL along the way. But friends who you never meet are friends you'll never truly know.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd probably trust certain secrets with someone online before I would do so in person. In person has a lot more access to areas of my life, plus the internet. Online, I can at least mitigate the damage.

Yeah, I feel the same way. Like, if I secretly hated someone in my group of RL friends, I wouldn't want to burden any other RL friends with that knowledge, because it would be awkward for them and eventually they'd probably tell someone. Same if I had a crush on someone, or something like that.

If I'd committed a crime or something, I probably wouldn't talk about that online (unless it was just file downloading or something), but I haven't.

regardless of how close they are to me, I don't really know them or what they are doing with my information

That holds equally true for your RL friends.

It really depends on your circumstances. For example, a gay person in a deeply homophobic area might not want to be coming out to his/her friends, even if said friends might accept it, because there is a possibility that someone unpleasant could get hold of that information. But keeping it a total secret can be really isolating. Telling someone who is ostensibly miles away and who in all likelyhood isn't going to hunt that person down based on an IP address can be very relieving. This obs. applies to a lot of other circumstances as well (I know atheists in very religious areas who were amazed to find people online who actually *agreed* with them).

Also, you're on fandomsecrets lol. This is pretty much proof that there are things people feel more comfortable saying anonymously to strangers on the Internet than to their nearest and dearest.
