Almost all of my favorite characters from ASoIaF are women. How can anyone hate Brienne? Seriously.

Same. My top 5 characters are Cat, Brienne, Jaime, Asha and Sansa. There are a lot of really great female characters in the series.

Oh wow! My top five are Sansa, Asha, Brienne, Dany, and Jaime. Cat's up there too, though; my favorite Tully-Stark after Sansa.

ASoIaF is great for having a variety of believable female heroines and villains even while set in a crushingly misogynist society. Hell, even the background characters can be pretty awesome.

I doubt that many people hate Brienne as a character, they just hate her as a POV character because they find her chapters unbearably boring. So it's less "I hate Brienne because she did this or that" than "GODS NO I DON'T WANT TO READ ANOTHER THIRTY PAGES OF NOTHING HAPPENING!" ;) So in this case I think it's less people hating a female character than people just disagreeing on which chapters are interesting and which aren't.

Stepping into this fandom was really weird for me because I wasn't expecting the magnified hate toward female POV characters not named Arya. Admittedly, AFFC wasn't very enjoyable for me, and ADWD was a chore for me (twist after twist! it's just like LOST durrrr!), but Brienne basically broke my heart for all the crap she gets put through and everyone's terrible expectations of her.

Just. I'd love it if I never had to read a Theon chapter again, but people hating Brienne's is—I don't get it.
