Oh, you better not be hating on the Hamlet Chronicles.

OP

Lost was actually what inspired this secret (that book was so bad it actually made me angry) but I have yet to read anything totally original by him that wasn't at the very least problematic. And no, I don't want recs.

Well, as long as you're not hating on the Hamlet Chronicles.

[identity profile] ichthyosaur.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
maybe if he wrote a horrible novel but didn't publish it, and then wrote fanfiction of that and did!

[identity profile] cheshirecat324.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
And then someone could publish a retelling of his fanfic and then the retelling could get popular and develop a fandom where people would write fanfic of the retelling of his fanfic and we could all see forever!

[identity profile] ichthyosaur.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
then throw in sequels and prequels and it's a total funhouse of a fandom, you'll never find your way out

[identity profile] cheshirecat324.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
It's an Escher-like hellscape of fandom! And I can't wake up!

[identity profile] ichthyosaur.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
and THEN - the Broadway play

[identity profile] cheshirecat324.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Noooooooooooooooo!

[identity profile] immortality.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Imho, Wicked was his only good book. The sequels to Wicked don't even hold up to it at all.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

Though, I also liked the musical of Wicked, so you should probably take my opinion with a grain of salt. ^_^;;

[identity profile] deadtree.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
agreed. And honestly, all the other books of his I've read make me worry that, should I go back and reread Wicked, I'd find it was dull, meandering, and full of lifeless characters, too :\ Fortunately I left my copy on the other side of the planet and have never seen it at a bookstore again (haven't looked) so I don't have to worry about that...

[identity profile] ginpenguin.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
See, I liked Son of a Witch a little bit better than Wicked, but I tend to have unpopular book opinions. I can see where his writing could be potentially problematic.

[identity profile] replicantangel.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I think all of his writing is pretty terrible - his 'fanfic' in particular, tbh. Dull and messily done overall.

[identity profile] stupid-laura.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Confessions is the only book of his I actually still like. The sequels ruined Wicked for me (A Lion Among Men was such a mess omg), and Mirror Mirror is pretty much the most boring thing I've ever read. Never read Lost, it did not interest me in the slightest.

I do like the Hamlet Chronicles, though. But I read those long before I had ever heard of his fairytale books.

The only non-fanfic book of his I've read is The Next Queen of Heaven, and I didn't think it was that bad. I mean, it wasn't great, but it had its moments. The sequels to Wicked, OTOH, are just awful.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-09-14 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, I totally agree that even some of his fanfics and retellings (Mirror Mirror, for example, was boring and made no sense) are pretty bad, but I have found that I universally can't stand his original work, no matter how many of them I try to read. The guy's a pretty mediocre writer in general, but it seems like unless he has some pre-existing story or characters to build on he doesn't even have a prayer. Ymmv, of course.
