[Switched at Birth]

I get fairly pissed off at Bay's ignorance at times too, but I am hoping that they have her doing it on purpose and that she will get better (because this show has surprised me so many times on how they've dealt with things that I am holding out hope, even though I am not wanting her and Emmett to be dating).

Anyways, if you truely found a passion, that's amazing :D My BFF and I got into it because of our/my deaf dog , so I've been slowly picking up more and more ASL for the last two years.

I get where a lot of these secrets are coming from, but sometimes it seems like push to make this wonderfully tolerant and accepting place (depending on what you believe, natch) has become a mindset of "nobody should ever encourage or nudge anyone else to step outside their comfort zone! Everyone should always be able to do whatever they want without ever being even confronted with other options!"

But I guess that's the GOOD kind of echo chamber to build?

"nobody should ever encourage or nudge anyone else to step outside their comfort zone! Everyone should always be able to do whatever they want without ever being even confronted with other options!"

No, that's not it. Sometimes it feels like it's a push from people to be more "normal" so that we are more "acceptable". Why should we have to be more like something we're not? It's fine if you are comfortable with it, but if you're not, why not work on things that give you confidence instead of things that take your confidence in yourself away? It's not for people who aren't very close or who don't know the situation very well. Because you know what the other thing is? When people keep asking the same thing all the time because they feel like they can, or should. Some questions are fine, but all too often (sadly, and weirdly, often in shops) they take a really frustrating turn.

That's not it in it's entirety too, I would need to write you an essay to explain the different sides of it.

[And for the record, I'm not Deaf (as I said above, I have basic ASL skills that I've been working on the past couple yars), but I have a genetic mutation (mwahaha, I am a mutant, but a crappy one) that has caused me to have spasticity in my muscles (and shit balance), so sometimes I can understand about the annoyingness of certain types of questions, and people wanting you to be more "mainstream" to make them more comfortable, and not what will work best for you]

TL;DR: So I guess the overall lesson is people can be different and not want to be like everyone else, and that is okay. But if they want to be more like everyone else that is okay. But if they don't want it? It should not be pushed upon them. And it definitely shouldn't be pushed upon them by people who are not very close to them, and who do not fully understand what the situation entails, because then they rarely have said persons best interests at heart.

This, exactly. I have some limiting health problems myself, so the way that storyline was handled so badly hit me hard.

When I saw this, I could not to get to the comments section fast enough. I love Switched at Birth, really, but that pairing drives me crazy. I wanted to like them, but they were just so forced. Seriously, their relationship evolution has been like this:

Episode six: Hanging out.
Episode seven: Kissing.
Episode eight: Making out, arguing over speech barriers, making out some more so they won't have to argue.
Episode nine: Risking the police and their parents' prejudices for each other.
Episode ten: Being complete hypocrites to Daphne and learning magical speech therapy to stay together.

Yet the audience bought it completely...

I want to like Bay/Emmett more than I actually do like them because I sense that it's going to be staying around. I just fix it by threesomeing Bay/Emmett/Daphne. *shrugs*

And ASL is amazing! I'm studying now (not to be an interpreter, just because I love it). The world always needs more interpreters, so that's really great. :D

I made a secret a while ago about how I hate the scene when Emmett speaks to Bay because it gives off the impression that her wanting him to speak was the issue. She only asked him about talking once and when he told her he didn't have any desire to speak, she never mentioned it again. Emmett is the one that exploded because she didn't know the sign for "bet". Bay is trying so hard to meet him halfway in their relationship and she never gets credited for it, all because Emmett spoke to her a whole 3 or 4 episodes after she asked him about it.

At least now I know I am not the only person thinking this

(Anonymous) 2011-09-15 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I think speaking when you can't even hear yourself is a bit harder than learning a second language. Learning sign language is not a touchy subject with Bay, but speaking is with Emmett. And the way it was handled was just awful. "Do you ever speak? Could you ever speak? ...Okay, I get it, let's just keep making out so we won't have to argue." Then soon after, Emmett asked his mother for speech therapy, which he learned ridiculously fast despite the fact that his mom wasn't even willing to give it to him.

My sister wants to become an ASL interpreter because of this show as well. :)
