The reason he tried to kill her was because she was hurting Oz, or he thought she was hurting Oz. Towards the beginning of the series, Alice was a vessel for all of Gilbert's frustration at what had happened to someone he felt very close to. He thought, wrongly, that if Alice was eliminated, a lot of problems would be solved. But as the series progressed, he came to tolerate Alice, and they have this kind of...well, it's almost like they're bickering siblings. They get along in a weird way, but I do think they both understand what the other means to Oz.
I'm not trying to convert you or anything, since as I said, I'm not a fan of this pair myself, but there are reasons that people enjoy them together. While it's not bashing the pair, to dismiss any possible alternate interpretations of canon relationships simply because you don't see it really isn't better.

but hey fellow PH fan in fandomsecrets. 8D I still agree with this comment. Gil and Alice have gotten to the point where can be like "... i don't completely hate you" "I don't completely hate you either." and their bickering is just all levels of amazing. Especially when they both fight for Oz's affections.

It's one of the things I like most about the series, that you can really see the relationships evolve. Alice and Gil are markedly different from how they were, and how they treated each other at the beginning. And I like them as tentative friends, because as you said, their bickering is really amusing.

Yeah I think Alice is kind of hated in the PH comm. >_>;;; Which I find really weird because she's the exact opposite of what people usually complain about in a heroine... and still not overdone/"a fiesty chick". Psh whatever. She's amazing.

It's sad, but not surprising. Pandora Hearts is sadly a fujoshi fandom, which means Alice is ~in the way~ of Gil/Oz and must be hated no matter what. It's sad how that works. You could always, idk, ship her with Sharon or something. And then you could still like her as a character, you know? But the people who hate female characters like this are just always gonna do it. Oh well, I will love Alice forever~
Also I think we should maybe like. Friend add each other. You seem pretty cool~

Yeah, I've noticed that. I mean, look at Ao no Exorcist's love for Shiemi and FMA's love for Winry despite there being the usual "weak female character-haters"... an then we have Alice, but without the proper fanbase. I bet if the show was half as popular as FMA she'd be one of the most revered heroines around. She's just awesome.

It would help if the series had a bigger fanbase, definitely. And just. More fans that care about more than "omg Gil and Oz are so gay for each other teehee!" Because that's a lot of the problem. When most of the fans are just drooling over cute boys and slash elements, of course poor Alice will get bashed. Which is just plain shameful, given what an excellent character she is.

... As the author of a recent GilAlice fic who is also insane for yandere!Oz x Alice canon (I ship both GilAlice and OzAlice hush) ... do I know you?
But honestly I like that twisted aspect the most, especially since Gilbert ended up saving her life. Also, she -or at least the past Alice was a bitch to him in the previous life, she bullied him and his brother (I love Alice, she's the most perfect heroine I've ever seen don't blame her at all for that since the present Alice / past Alice). I just think the entire thing is twisted and can be oddly sweet and I love that.
The present Alice is NOT the past Alice, and heck it was probably her sister (the white Alice, not her) but to Gil, she was still Alice. The girl who always made his head hurt for unknown reasons and the girl who was slowly killing the person he'd devoted his life to.
Although... I used to HATE Gilbert and hate this couple. When i first saw this pairing on FFN I was like "...really?" but the two really good fics were... really good and they sucked me in. 8/
So I get where you're coming from. xD Gil is so bloody MEAN to her now, and this Alice doesn't deserve it. Sure she's arrogant, bratty... but she's a sweet girl who is adorable in her own way. Like a curious child who bosses people around.
And hey, I don't like Ozebrt either (Though I can support it, I just hate how the fandom shuns you if you don't like it) so <3 nice to meet a kindered spirit.
Here, I'll even use an OzAlice icon instead of GilAlice. =o
