Because they're fanfic writers. They can do whatever the hell they want because it's not real.

Indeed.

As a writer of RPF I give this comment a big honking THUMBS UP.

Laziness, at least in part. It's hard to write sympathetic characters who are also being unfaithful. That's part of why rps can be such a challenge - is the wife in on it? Is she cool with being a beard? If she's not, how do you make her sound less homophobic? Is making them poly just a lameass handwave? I wrote a few rps fics back in the day and I always tried to make sure the wives were included but it does affect some people's suspension of disbelief.

:\ :\ :\ That is the only kind of RPF I don't like. It just completely ruins it for me, esp. with them, since I love Anne-Marie. But that's a totally valid kink, I s'pose.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-15 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! I thought that maybe one of them is married in a version of the comics, and I was about to be all "movie!verse, for fuck's sake! Neither one is married!"

Judging by the other comments, the OP was apparently referring to RPF. So...never mind. Pretty much all the RPF I've ever seen (I avoid it like the plague, though, so keep that in mind) doesn't give a rat's ass about any real-life relationships or orientations of the people involved. Why should stories about this "couple" be any different?

(Anonymous) 2011-09-15 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Most likely because of the common fandom idea of "it's not true love if there was ever someone else." Also, adultery is a pretty prevalent squick from what I've seen, so that probably doesn't help.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-15 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe because he really seems to love her and what do you do with that in your RPF, especially of non-epic, short variety. That's not exactly the definition of perfect romance. A guy who loves his wife and fucks his co-star.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-15 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
Because erasing women is what these people do.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-15 10:06 am (UTC)(link)
I read that with Jim Moriarty's voice and it was glorious.
ext_562883: (no really!)

Ok, reading through the comments and...

I've always been wonderin, why so many RPS fics (in my RPS fandom, that is another one than OP's) include the protagonists' friends and jobs and stayed as close to canon as possible in so many ways, but pretended, both guys were single, even though they're not. It always bugged me.
I mean, I'd rather read fic without the wife/wives of the guys than one, where they're included, but people make them absolute bitches, but... I dunno, I like my fic at least somewhat realistic :/ at least, when it's about the characters' backgrounds. So I love myself some fic, where the guys really care about their families/significant others, but still fall in love with each other...

I never assumed, some ppl might actually be squicked by adultery o_o'

(Anonymous) 2011-09-16 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
idk about others but Anne Marie Duff is such an hbic that i don't even want to contemplate the idea of James McAvoy cheating on her atm

(Anonymous) 2011-09-17 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
+1. And I have a huge adultery squick. I just hate reading or writing about characters cheating on each other because it's hard to make them sympathetic. So if I do include spouses, I usually write their marriages as open, or pretend that they're single.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-16 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Because some of us DON'T have an adultery kink? Because it's possible to like the idea of two hot men fucking while not liking the idea that one of them is cheating to do it, so since it's fiction anyway, it's easier to not do that?
