Friends, companions, mates, buddies, pals, comrades, compatriots, chums, classmates... bros, if you must.

I love Japanese too, OP - heck I'm getting my MA in and translate it regularly - but English has a much more expansive vocabulary to choose from, and one that is capable of greater nuance, besides.

Those people who watch One Piece and tell you that there's no "good" translation for "nakama" in English are either lying to defend the cultural cache involved with the Japanese language in nerd social circles, or sorely uneducated.

sorry, i was trying to get across that they are closer-than-close friends. 'band of brothers' is the closest equivalent i can come up with, and that's usually reserved for veterans.

i haven't taken japanese in forever (well done on your ma)- i just picked up the word from tv tropes. sorry if it came off as offensive.

BFFs, or even "bros", carry that connotation, though. That "nakama" rather than "best friends" comes to mind with "closers than close friends" is... odd.

But it's not offensive, just seems... off in a secret about The Arcade Fire (which I love, too!). If it were an anime or a Japanese band it would have more context.
