I don't like that excuse either. One of the biggest messages of the game was accepting yourself and all of the characters became more mature when they did so. But even with that character growth the homophobia was still okay because japanese game developers think homophobia is kawaii moe. Fans apparently agree, given Yosuke's popularity.

I really love the game, but I was rolling my eyes at how they used the possibility of Kanji being gay to attract attention to the game pre-release but then sidestepped the issue completely in the final product with a "oh shit I might like dudes oooops I guess I just like stitching plushies lolol" plot. Wtf was that, really.

Then there was Naoto who was promising when she joined, only to immediately become a girl with a occult femininity - LET'S PUT HER IN A DRESS YOU GUYS.

Like I said I like the series but I'll be watching the anime without any expectations, better that way. :P
