I honestly think one of the biggest barriers to people liking "classic" films is their advocates going around saying "YOU MUST LIKE THESE MOVIES THEY ARE CLASSICS THEY ARE SO MUCH BETTER THAN MODERN CRAP YOU UNSOPHISTICATED RUBE". It just sets up unrealistic expectations and makes people adversarial from the get go. I've had really good luck introducing friends to films both new and old based on things I know they like, and not putting too much pressure on them either way.

This. You can't dismiss classic cinema because, dude, that's a hundred years of film-making, there's a history there and some genuine gems. But that doesn't mean that everything that's been produced in a hundred years is going to be this fantastic piece of art, and no one thing is guaranteed to appeal to everyone.
