A lot of fans love Ellen. A lot. There's plenty of love for the female characters out there. It's just unfortunate that the portion of fandom that hates on women characters for the crime of being women is extremely vocal about it. They're so loud it's kind of impossible to ignore them, and unfortunately their misogynistic flailing has gained them notoriety, which means people not actively involved in SPN fandom think those fans represent us all. Even more distressing, since they're the fans who make the biggest scene (often by loudly campaigning against female characters), they've become the fans the creators actually seem to listen to.

I was done with SPN the moment the deaths of the Harvelles had absolutely no significant impact on anything beyond adding to the angst.

Oh, the sane people care. But the problem is, we're afraid to get too attached to female characters because there is a VERY VOCAL faction of the fandom that screams from the second a new female character is introduced until the writers finally give up trying to make them happy and kill the character off. So there's no point, really.
