Am I the only one who doesn't get the squick of step-sibling ships? They're not blood-related, so what's the big deal? Not their fault their parents decided to date/get married. I never got this with the Dan/Serena draaaama on Gossip Girl (ZOMG we can't date because our parents are dating, woe is us!) either.

Well, if they're adults it's one thing, but if they're kids living together and basically being raised as siblings, I still see them as siblings. And stepkids are often adopted by the step-parent, making them real siblings. Not only do Derek and Casey fit this pattern, but they clearly see each other as siblings, so they might as well be.

So yeah. It's more about how they're raised than blood relation, IMO. Step-sibling ships squick me out more than cousin ships, for that reason.

Yeah, pretty much this. If their families join up when they're older, then I don't see the big deal. If they're raised together, then it can be weird.

Alright, I see what you mean, and I do agree. My point about Dan and Serena (and Jake and Claire from the secret) still stands though: they weren't raised as siblings, they only became stepsiblings AFTER they developed a romantic interest in each other, but fandom (and the characters themselves) freaked out like they'd just found out they were half-siblings or something and I never understood that.

uh, dan and serena's parents were
a) hooking up long before either of them were even born much less together
b) had a child together. Both Dan and Serena's older brother. It's not even like he was born after the fact.

Their situation is waaaay more than just oh our parents are dating.

Oh Derek and Casey, you had more chemistry with each other than you had with any of your boyfriends/girlfriends. I adored LWD. I haven't watched Degrassi in such a long time (when I heard about Spinner/Emma I just about cried (SPAIGE FOREVER!)) but I might have to get into it again.

I could not and still can't with people that shipped Derek/Casey and behaved like it was nbd no different than two strangers. It's not about the blood relation but the fact that they are raised and live as siblings that makes the difference, guys. Even more so that they have an actual bio sibling in common now. In fact I feel like a lot of what some people saw as chemistry was just sibling rivalry.
Jake and Claire is kind of a different story-more like that movie Crazy.

Like, go ahead and ship them, that's fine cause I'm the last person that's going to judge anyone's kinks but don't act like it doesn't fall under incest.
I feel like a lot of the people that ship them would feel differently if they had step-siblings.

hear hear I have a step brother and step sister since 14 and we are all around the same age group and they are the same to me as my biological sister aka brother and sister. To see one of them romantically would be same as seeing my full sister romantically
