the entire game is glorious eyecandy tbh. it's worth playing for the visuals alone.

And the original is just plain worth playing, because it's the greatest game ever made.

Should I play the original first, or are they sort of interchangeable?

Human Revolution is a prequel. Part of the fun in it, for me, was finding the little parallels and call-forwards to DX1. Storywise, DX1 is very focused on being a conspiracy kitchen sink super-imposed on a run-down cyberpunk setting. DXHR strips out a lot of the conspiracy stuff, keeping it largely in the background in favor of a story of maintaining humanity in the face of mechanical augmentation.

That being said...

DX1 is an old game. Getting it going on modern systems can be a little tricky, though there is help (http://kentie.net/article/dxguide/index.htm). More than that, it's got certain gameplay elements that kind of stick out like a sore thumb now, such as difficulty, but also the level design can be kind of bad (it gets better the further into the game you go, though) and combat is basically as stupid and frustrating as any Unreal Engine 1 game. You have to choose your skills and augmentations wisely, because some are quite worthless (free hint- nobody ever picks the swimming skill.)

But if you manage to shift the necessary rust of old-school gaming, you'll find yourself with an intensely rewarding game with a great plot- silly as it may seem now, it was asking stuff nobody else in the industry was even thinking about in 2000, except maybe Hideo Kojima- and a fantastic soundtrack to boot.

In conclusion, it's up to you really, but I'd probably say go with DX1 first, if only so DXHR's streamlining doesn't spoil you.

It really depends. It took me some doing to get it going on this brand new system, but in many cases you can just grab a DX9 renderer and be on your way.

Also, I highly recommend skipping Invisible War. It's one of the worst games I've ever played, and unlike DX1 it's not worth trying to get playing nice with modern systems.

I played Invisible War (part 2) first - played it through so many times I've lost count - and have never really grasped the full story. I'm playing Human Revolution now (prequel) and yeah... still having issues wrapping my head around the full scope of the story.

So I highly recommend playing them in order.

There is no reason to not buy Deus Ex 1 for $10 off Steam. And that includes already owning.

I have tried to play 1, believe me. Many a time. But I just can't play games with a keyboard/mouse. I need a controller.

Ok seriously, this is getting ridiculous. I don't want a Playstation. If I did, I would already own one.

And I can't play with a keyboard because I don't have the co-ordination for it. DX1 was the first game I have ever tried to play with a keyboard, and after 26 years of exclusively using controllers, I just can't do it.

I have tried many many times. In the end, I just don't care about playing the game enough to put myself through the frustration of constantly failing at it. Is that a good enough excuse, or are you now going to find some other amazon link to a USB controller?

I dunno, I wouldn't bother too much. Aside from it being more expensive, the console version is kind of shittier. I was mostly just giving

weekendoffender a hard time.

DX1 is not the hardest thing to get going, and in fact 90% of the time will run right out of the box. But if you want to make it look nice- or just play widescreen- you'll need to do a bit of tinkering.

But considering the OC was talking about visuals, I commented on the visuals.

Personally I enjoyed playing HR far more than the original game. Perhaps it's because I only played the first one a year ago so it's not a trip down nostalgia lane for me, and it took me a long time to finish it, idk.

And I was commenting on both games. Problem?
