Re: Three Kingdoms Derivative Works
it was the version I grew up on, watching it with my family after dinnerit actually had actors who were not just cast for their pretty faces, who read the original works, who were trained (somewhat) in horseback riding. Plus, the producers hired a boatload of extras to add authenticity, and the opening/closing themes were moving. Anyway, that is what I remember from the grapevine.Re: Three Kingdoms Derivative Works
I was also intensely fond of the 1994 version when I was younger - it represented the essence of Chinese history then, to me - but when I started watching the 2010 version, it dawned on me just how many misconceptions I had taken away from the original.
The 1994 version didn't deal very clearly with character motivations, for one. For example, despite reading the original RoTK and watching the 1994 version, I had *no idea* that Liu Bei's borrowing of Jingzhou was a big flaming deal until the 2010 version actually set up that plot properly, and made each character's actions in the matter memorable enough to understand. Characters in the 1994 version appeared and disappeared without much insight into their plot significance, and switching actors for many of them didn't help at all. Furthermore, Liu Bei in the 1994 version was an absolute tool who could do nothing without Zhuge Liang, and I personally would not have shipped him with anyone.
Secondly, from a performance standpoint: I can't watch the original any more after the 2010 version, because the actors in the new series behave far more like humans. Going back to the 1994 version, I found a large amount of theatrical behavior in the actors' gestures and intonation. Whether or not they were more skilled at, say, Beijing Opera and traditional Chinese performance is certainly debatable, but that skill didn't translate over to the serial drama very well. To Western audiences, I believe the 2010 version would feel more approachable and authentic.
Thirdly, smaller points: there were not enough extras in the original, and battle scenes, to those of us who've now grown up with Lord of the Rings and other large-scale warfare portrayals, now feel like street fights. The extras - and even the duels! - also tended to be seriously unenthusiastic, to the point where I thought a "bout" was two people hitting one another's spears and yelling loudly. I won't defend the 2010 version's close-up battle scenes - too much chaos, no direction - but there was at least a sustainable illusion of large hosts clashing against one another in earth-shaking conflict.
Re: Three Kingdoms Derivative Works
I would love to but, alas, I've not watched the 2010 version yet and I haven't seen any the 1994 version (except for the opening episode, see more below) for ~15 years now. What I remember of the actors' skills is hazy at best, and strongly influenced by the naïveté of a child's mind.
What I heard from the grapevine regarding the 2010 version came from people in their 40s-50s. I can't speak for them, of course, but their familiarity with original work probably weighed in on their conclusions for and against the 2010 version. Personally, I never imagined the tv adaption as a realistic reflection of the events; I saw it as theatrical-play-viewable-on-tv -- better backdrops, more props, and omg closeups! Besides, tv dramas were still relatively new back then. I won't be surprised if the audience was more familiar with theatre plays than tv dramas at the time, and the show was filmed in reflection of that.
Speaking of theatrical style and reusing actors on tv - did you ever watch the 93' version of Bao Qing Tian? I rewatched it recently. It was campy and nostalgic, and compltely lulzy when the actor playing the villian from previous episodes returned to play the heroic character. My friends who grew up here watched it with Chinese subs and had trouble understanding it. Did the 2010 version of RotK have more modern dialogue? Red Cliff also modernized greatly, but ack, the dialogue was atrocious and some events... *deviated* from actual historical happenings.
Mind you, I DID watch the opening episode of the 94 version about the same time as when I re-watched Bao Qing Tian. I remember being distracted by the awful subs, and my remaining brain cells drooled over Liu Bei's figure. What can I say, he had a nice behind =P
Re: Three Kingdoms Derivative Works
I'm sad to say I haven't watched Bao Qing Tian - my exposure to old Chinese drama is mostly limited to what I can remember of military dramas about Mao's life, comedies set in the Qing dynasty, the old Journey to the West, and RoTK. But I'd share your distraction by the awful subs in the 94 version if I watched it again, I'm sure. Just not, um, the drooling. How did you manage to focus on his...? He's so...weepy. o_O
But if you're still interested in RoTK, I'd certainly recommend watching the 2010 version! I understand that many people who've built up their impression of that period based on the 1994 version might be a little biased at first - I know I was. But if you keep an open mind for character differences, acknowledge that some events might be worse than the original, but some might be much better or simply different, and don't hurry to write it off after a few episodes, it does stand on its own and tell a gripping story very well. Furthermore, most of the main characters - from all three kingdoms, to boot - are strongly developed, very likable, and/or easily empathized with, and several have definitely improved over the 94 version, Liu Bei and Lu Su for starters. I've left links all over this comment thread, I think; do check it out when you have the time.
(I'm also helping with the fansub effort for the series, and we're nearly done (80 out of 95), so consider this a shameless plug as well /o/)
Re: Three Kingdoms Derivative Works
Glad to hear the dialogue's more authentic than Red Cliff. And oh gawd the horse-birthing scene and Zhou Yu's wife. No need to review these memories again. As for Liu Bei's figure, well, his weepiness does not detract from his physical features. Plus, it DID distract me from the excessive crying and the poorly timed and translated subs. Ya just gotta focus on the positives, ya know? ;)
Old dramas - I can barely remember the old Monkey King. Best memories of it are the theme songs =P Tried to watch it again a year ago and winced at the special effects. BQT -> RotTK -> Prime Minister Liu Luo Guo -> Returning Pearl Princess was the rough timeline for after-dinner dramas in the 90s. Don't remember any Mao dramas, surprisingly. Still have a thing for period drama + martial arts (or what my friend call flying-monk dramas). Does Liu Luoguo and Princess Pearl ring any bells?
+1 for subbing the series. I've always thought there were less people willing to take on the period dramas because the style is so different from modern Chinese. Don't mind the shameless plug if it means introducing the series to more people =D
Maybe we should take the rest to pm?
