i don't see how his motivations were hard to figure out.

Beginning: He likes to make mischief or play pranks. So he let a couple frost giants in to asgard to alarm the city in order to screw up Thor's big day of celebration to be the next king of asgard. Loki says as much in the movie.

Middle-End: Loki's jealous of Odin's love for Thor and doesn't feel like he's loved the same since he's not Odin's actual son. So he tries to impress Odin by destroying Jotunheim (which they would be having to go to war with soon because of Thor's actions earlier in the story)

As a side-note, he didn't try to destroy Jotunheim just to impress Odin, it was also to wipe out an entire race based on self-loathing. Because if all the Frost Giants were one, he could convince himself that he wasn't one and that he really belonged in Asgard.
