If you go to a con and actually get the chance to interact with the boys at THAT level (not just as a face in the crowd,) it would mean you've spent a decent amount of money on it. I'm not sure what the boys think of that but at least they'd know, "this person spent good money to meet us so they must have a source of income. Which means they have a life and not spending all their time on fandom."

[identity profile] unstoppablei.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
But even then, they know that you spent THAT much money just to go to a con (possibly traveling a long way) just to meet them. That implies a pretty hardcore level of fan love.

I had gold tickets for a con that I had to sell because I am poor, but then afterwards felt somehow...relieved, for the reasons the OP mentioned. I know the guys are great and appreciate their fans, and that's awesome, and I know it isn't right to feel this way but I can't help it. *shrugs*

Oooor that they "have nothing better to spend their money on"?

I don't mean to be cynical, but to be totally honest that's what I would've thought they'd assume.

I understand. I get a lot of second hand embarassment from fandom, especially the SPN fandom. However I still participate in my own small way for the bits of it that I do enjoy and appreciate.

From what I've seen of recent con footage (Comicon 2011 and VanCon) the fans that ask the questions and interract with J&J are respectful and well mannered and aren't embarassing themselves or fandom-at-large. They genuienly love the show and respect and admire the actors.

Knowing me, were I ever able to go to a can and meet J&J I'd just sit there quietly and smile a lot. If only to avoid foot-in-mouth disease.

Having recently been to a con: NONE of the fans (at least at any of the panels I went to) were crazy tinhats. I was pleasantly surprised, given the things I've heard about the SPN fandom...

going a bit OT...

i like them but i'd never spend actual money on seeing them. I like Jensen and nowadays i only watch the show because of him (fuck the plot) no shame, but i feel such a second hand embarrassment at the thought of people drooling on the guy's faces cause i've seen videos and they're all giggles and shy like schoolgirls just because a hot guy is there.

I mean, yes, he's hot, but he's not a fucking alien to make you unable to speech. i mean... rly?

I don't think it's just that they're hot - I think it's more to do with them being a celebrity. No matter how awesome and chill we'd all like to think we are, when you meet somebody that you watch weekly on your tv it's like crossing over some weird line and most people do react to that. Particularly if you're doing a meet and greet or photo op - you have a very small window of time to introduce yourself, say you enjoy their work or make small talk, pose for a photo and pray you look okay, all while standing next to somebody who is famous and who you've probably paid in both money and effort to meet. It's weirdly like a timed job interview or something, in terms of atmosphere. Hell, I got shy and nervous meeting fucking Aladdin at Disney World! Not because I thought he was the real cartoon character or because I thought he was hot or anything like that. But because I had to stand in line to meet him, slowly growing closer to the front, and then suddenly whoosh I'm swept up there and he's chattering a mile a minute and I'm being directed to pose for pictures and it's all confusing and a little overwhelming. When you're used to watching somebody else (whether it's an actor on tv or a character at Disney World from a queue) and then suddenly have all their attention (not to mention the attention of everybody watching) focused on you, it throws you off-balance.

The fact that you have any self-consciousness means you're sane, far more so than many. :) If you want to go, go and have fun!

[identity profile] gershwhen.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't blame you, OP. I'd like to think that they know not all of fandom is totally crazy, but I still believe that they paint us all with the same brush of wack-a-doodle. They may be gentlemen, and polite at doing their jobs, but I don't think any of us what to hear what they say in the green room before/after their meet and greets.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
That applies to every actor at every con EVER. They don't mind pocketing the cash, tho.

[identity profile] stickingplaster.livejournal.com 2011-09-19 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think you'd only need to be ashamed about going to a con if you are one of the extremely overweight 40-year-old women who have paid $1000 for a ticket + travelling expenses.
