It could happen, but things like Pottermore are a good way to keep the fandom alive.

[identity profile] stickingplaster.livejournal.com 2011-09-19 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Although, I find Pottermore way overrated.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-17 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh anon, have no fear - there are so many fandoms for shows that ran in the 90's and early 00's, and for books and comics that aren't being written anymore. Once a fandom gets started, it doesn't need continual canon input to keep going. It develops a life of its own, and becomes self-sustaining.

(and quite possibly the HP fandom will get smaller, or change, but anon you have a long, long way to go before it dies out.)

It develops a life of its own, and becomes self-sustaining.

And if any fandom is self-sustaining, it's Harry Potter. It has fanfic of fanfic of fanfic, for goodness' sake. Though OP did say their concern was irrational. :)

[identity profile] alizara.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
There are still very active fandoms for tings that go back much farther than that. The original Star Trek, for instance. I don't think Harry Potter is in much danger because the adult fans will introduce their kids to it and there'll always be a new generation of fans.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-17 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
of course it is going to die out Anon.

That is what fandoms do when there is no fresh content to obsess over. It comes in stages, first there is the desperate hunt for ancillary materials, elevating trivia to canon. Then comes the long slow drop off, then a few left turns as accepted and cherished fanon conventions are overturned in favor of some new "adult" interpretation. Finally fandom starts cannibalising itself becomming more a fandom of the fandom, until it becomes half-dozen guys huddled in basements and/or lowgrade backroads motels sharing memories of how great it was once, but silently accepting its over. Happens to every fandom, ever.

Potterdom is just at stage one, maybe stage two, but it is in the long slow decline phase.

Well aren't you cheery?

Goodness. What a Debbie Downer.

The Sherlock Holmes, LotR, Doctor Who, Star Trek, and Star Wars fandoms would like to speak with you out in the hall, please. (Among others.)

Oh come on--

Sherlock Holmes doesn't count because that series is constantly being reinvented and reimagined.

Ditto Doctor Who, which as you probably know is actually in the middle of a new season RIGHT NOW.

Star Wars fandom... doesn't that thrive on books and games which are still being produced?

LotR fandom is the only one which really doesn't have any active new material recently, and it's unquestionable that the big boom that they got from the movies has significantly dropped off. I have no doubts that it's an active fandom, but I seriously doubt it's really THAT big anymore. I wouldn't say that it's in any kind of active decline, so much that it's... gone fallow.

I suspect Harry Potter fandom will do much of the same thing (assuming there won't ever be any spin-off series or major new content outside of what Pottermore has to offer).

It's not really bashing to point out that a lot of fans need some level of novelty in terms of the injection of new material to keep their interests primed. Harry Potter fandom is so huge that I'm sure it will never actually die, but there's a fair chance that interest will slow down and as time goes on people will find themselves engaging more in other new things that will come out in the future.

(that said, "until it becomes half-dozen guys huddled in basements and/or lowgrade backroads motels sharing memories of how great it was once, but silently accepting its over" was a pretty derogatory statement from anon up there...)

not the nicest comment, but very true

[identity profile] rimuvxg.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's any consolation, I've been in fandoms for ridiculously obscure telly from at least three decades ago that are still going. They're slow, sure, but on the bright side, the fic is generally leagues better and the fans are less rabid. The fandoms don't so much die as...mature. Like wine. :)

[identity profile] murderershair.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, it'll be fine. Slower, probably, eventually, but it's not going to die out completely. I've been working on a bunch of genfic myself, but it's slow going because holy shit there's so much to research and cross-reference and then you hit a contradiction and aaauggh.

If Rowling and Warner Brothers can keep pumping out Harry Potter related stuff like the way George Lucas keeps pumping out Star Wars related stuff, I don't see the fandom dying any time soon.

[identity profile] ditdatdo.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
If it goes like Star Wars, fans should be more worried about the new content ;)

(Anonymous) 2011-09-17 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
yes

[identity profile] j-lunatic.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Tru dat.

[identity profile] szaleniec1000.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
And will be.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It'll slow down, but I doubt it'll ever die out completely.

[identity profile] roguebelle.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah. JK's a marketing genius. She timed Pottermore brilliantly -- for just the moment when everyone was having these nostalgic, fearful fits. It's already revitalizing fandom -- I've seen it happening in some of my old haunts and circles. It'll escalate once the site's open to all. That woman is fiendishly clever.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Judging from what I saw at the NYC premiere alone, it will never, ever, EVER EVER die out.

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I think it probably has a lot of life in it yet, especially since so many people have grown up with it. I think there's also a lot of room for exploration in fic. It will likely slow down eventually, and it'll probably change, but I'd be surprised if it died out completely any time soon.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
I think it'll be around for a long time, much like Star Wars.

But I did grow out of fandom. I haven't even gone to go watch the last film. Everyone has been genuinely shocked and surprised that I'm the one person who has not seen the film. I guess I got over it somewhere between the 100th or so discussion on the last book and watching the seventh film that I just decided that I didn't need to be active in fandom anymore. I feel kind of sad now.
