This secret is brilliant.

I always assumed that they were all Japanese, except for L whose ethnicity I wasn't sure about but didn't really care about, either. He could've been part Japanese, could've been fully Japanese, but because he kept going by "Ryuzaki" I assumed he was at least somewhat Japanese. IDK. The fact the he lived in Britain doesn't automatically make him British, though.

ETA: I get why you'd imagine L as British but I really don't get why you would think of Misa as American

Misa is half American what? American is a nationality and not an ethnic group. Saying that she is half American means she can look like anything.

I think the OP means culturally American. You could say the same about L being half British.

But America is the only multicultural society!!!!

Obha him/herself has said that L is: 1/4 English, 1/4 Russian, 1/4 Japanese, and 1/4 French or Italian. So he is partially Japanese, but probably looks more Caucasian than Asian. Oh, and yes, I DO think a White, native English speaker should have played him in the live action movies. They got a White guy to play the fake L for a few minutes; they couldn't find a White guy to play the actual L?

Well, gaijin are good for cameos, comic relief, and the occasional menacing villain-type, but anything more than that? Surely you realize that only a Japanese person could possibly manage a lead role.

More charitably, there are not very many white people/native English-speakers living in Japan to begin with, and most of them can't act. Somewhere there's a very amusing interview with the casting director of Silent Hill 2 on this subject.

Counting the fact that most of even Japanese actors (in drama) can't act too.

It's a little weird that he's supposed to be 3/4 white when he goes by a Japanese name at a Japanese school and attracts absolutely no commentary, TBH.

I seem to remember Misa also had a Death Note that she used? Also, her relationship with Light was very, very creepy (from both sides). Of course, Light was a thousand times worse.

Well, for Misa I can see that making sense. I mean, I don't know if her hair is bleached or not (my honest guess is that it is), but I have a friend who's culturally half American and half Japanese*, and she has blond hair, so it's kind of fun to imagine that sort of background for Misa. <3

*At least, that's what she told me. <3

A lot of girls bleach their hair, and they're full Japanese.

If Misa's hair was bleached, wouldn't there have been some sort of regrowth when she was locked up for months? Her hair was still perfectly blonde afterwards. That always annoyed me.

L is said to be a quarter Japanese, English, Russian and French or Italian. Personally, I think of his Japanese traits as being strong enough that he can pass for Japanese at school. Although he's not culturally Japanese.

Misa probably would need to look sufficiently Japanese to be a popular idol. I always just thought she dyed her hair.

I've seen theories that Light is the one who isn't fully Japanese because of his name, his hair and the fact that he doesn't look like the other members of his family (so he's adopted). I'm not sure I support that, though.
